What should I know or do prior to switching my gig lappy to Windows 7?

Ensure your soundcard will work once update has installed the drivers. Took me 3 days to find a un-released driver on the net.
Not to mention that if your switching from XP to Win 7, its only possible to do this if you completly format your H/d. This is why i have 2 H/d's. 1x System, 1x Music + Games.
Ensure you also get the correct opperating bit. IE. If you have dual core get a 64bit os as it runs alot smoother, but 32bit will work fine. (Single Core)
Other then that, VDJ works fine with it, and so dose the RMX

I'll be switching from Vista Home Professional to 7 Home Professional.

Still always better to do a complete clean install. Also bear in mind that if you go the upgrade route it can go horribly wrong. Make sure everything is fully backed up and recoverable.

This is true for XP. Vista users can upgrade to W7 without a re-format...
The main thing will be drivers. Software works fine. I've been using it on my desktop with W7 for months.
Unless you have W7 compatible drivers don't even attempt to upgrade.

Roy

True... Windows Easy Transfer is the best solution.
It will back up all your documents and app settings in to a single file which you can then restore from.
So, if your upgrade goes bad you can start from a clean install and then just restore all your settings.
Obviously anything stored outside of the \users\username folder/file structure will not be saved. So make sure all your docs are stored within this folder.
Alternatively, if you have two or more partitions on your hard drive, you can move your Vista folders to a different partition without hacking the registry:
1. Create a folder called users on your d: or chosen partition
2. Create a folder within this with your username
3. For each of the Vista user folders (Documents, Downloads, Favourites, Music, etc) create an equivalent
3. From the Vista start menu select your username
4. On each of the Vista folders right-click
5. From the popup dialog select the Location tab
6. Press the Move button
7. Select the folder in the new location
Windows will move all the documents, apply the correct icon to the folder and re-direct all the shortcuts
You can then upgrade/install your system partition with Windows 7 safely without loosing your documents.
If you do a clean install, simply repeat the above process to re-connct your files with your profile.
Cheers,
Roy

Beside drivers make sure with your laptop manufacturer that your BIOS is up to-date.

Run the win7 installer and select the option to download the preinstall check.
highly recommend you build your machine with win7 from scratch. yes, upgrade works but can confirm its not guaranteed. have installed on dozens of machines and have experienced maybe 20% failure rate with some laptops including HP, Toshiba.
If your lappie is for professional use, rebuild it. You dont see F1 teams building their cars on used models

that should be easy enough....I don't think I have anything on it besides VDJ and RMX drivers...I knew I was getting the free upgrade disc so I purposely didn't add on anything else. Sounds like I just need to back-up my music and VDJ folder and do a clean install....am I right?

You are right!
I personally would put the files on a external hard drive for a backup, then do a clean install (IE, formatt the whole hard drive). Its better practice.

Not always the case. There are drivers out there esp designed for W7, though a majority of vista drivers do
