Hi all,

I have been using a friends laptop with Virtual DJ on for a while, as I have been doing lots of research into which software to buy.

I have had a few crashes on the demo of Virtual DJ 6 on my Dell laptop which is high spec. but it runs VISTA.

Now I have made my mind 100% in going on to buy virtual DJ but i wanted to ask the following questions if you guys can assist me before I buy.

1= I am tempted into buying a mac book pro. for DJing and also for personal things. Will a MAC be good for virtual DJ or will a standard laptop be better??? ( i hear mac do not crash, but i hear VDJ crashes a lot on a mac?)

2= I have just ordered the denon HC4500 for my purchase - i have heard from a few users that they have at times difficulty as I have had with my HD2500 from my friends laptop and VDJ that it takes a while and a few attemps to get the HD2500 or HC4500 icon on VDJ to go GREEN to accept its USB connection, and at times when it is green then the play button shows its working (colour flashing) but the track will not play ?....

3= If i go out and buy a new laptop (thinking of options!) and it will have windows 7 on, will this work well with the latest version of VDJ?
(also if I get Windows 7 and go for the pro upgrade it has an XP mode on, is it worth running it in this? or will Windows 7 be fine?)

4= If I do an upgrade from vista to windows 7 pro. on my current laptop, will this be better?? or is it true its best to get a whole new version of windows 7 rather than the upgrade as people say vista still runs in the background???

Any advise will be great!!!

Look forward to being a full VDJ user soon!!!!!

ps,

my current laptop is:

Dell Intel Core 2 Duo T6400(2.0GHz,800MHz,2MB) 1 595.95 595.95 S
Display : 17in Widescreen WXGA+ with Truelife- CCFL 1 S
LCD Back Cover : Plum Purple Microsatin Finish 1 S
Memory : 4096MB (2x2048) 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel 1 S
Hard Drive 320GB SATA (5400rpm) 1 S
Graphics : 256 MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3650
Windows Vista (Which I hate !!!...so slow and makes everything crash and do 10 updates everytime I turn it on)

If I do get the PC version of VDJ for now, and get a MAC in a few weeks (After I save some money!!) do I have to buy VDJ again???

Personally I prefer the PC platform for VDJ. Of course you can use a Mac + Bootcamp.

Then they are doing something wrong; Ive got a HC4500 and have never had any issues with it.

Windows 7 works just fine. Personally I would opt for the 32-bit version at this time.

That run in the background thing isn't true; but a full wipe and reinstall is always preferable to an OS upgrade.

Nope. You are licensed for two installs (to be used only by you - for example one on a backup machine) and the platform is irrelevant :)

Hi there,

Thanks for the info - that is great on the back up etc...

a couple of extra questions for any helpers!

ok, I get two downloads (one for my main laptop, and one on my older one). What if I then get a mac say later on and I have had my two downloads? will i then have to pay again to put it on my MAC, or say if I had to do a total re-install etc.....so you get 2 downloads and if i change machine in a year or two then its another purchase?

thanks guys

hey Scott - any any other users can anyone also help me with this:

Scott, you are also a full time DJ like myself, can you advise me what you use for running VDJ on? do you have any photos of the set up.

Also I am running an external hard drive, is it best to still do this? some people are saying never use the built in hard drive on a laptop as it can over heat etc......

I have a few friends who have a PC in 2 U rackmount and flight case it.

just looking at options!

cheeeeeers

You'll be ok re licences, if i were you I'd just get a PC laptop. Actually theres nothing wrong with the one you have however you could do with putting a larger hd in it, some use ext hd's but i've always found it better when using internal.

PS, really you should have a dedicated machine i.e. if you do use your current machine make sure your not using it for all your computer needs! just having VDJ on it and your music plus drivers is best.

If you buy a new PC un-install VirtualDJ from your old machinethen, install a fresh copy on your new PC. There will be no need to purchase another license. Also, in case you did not know, upgrade from one version to the newer versions have always been free of charge to date. I use a 64 bit Vista machine with a VCI-300 live and it works like a charm. I've used this set up at weddings, corporate events, and bars/pubs for several hours and have had no issues what so ever.

All of my music is stored on external drives. I have four of them, all de-fragmented weekly. I use USB sticks to move song files from one drive to the next. This way all four have identical songs on them. One user recently started a thread about his worst nightmare. That was his external hard drive crashing and loosing all of his music. I suggest externals and always having a spare. There was one instance I plugged in a drive and it was dead. No worries, switched to the back up and I was off and running.

If you are interested in doing video building a rack mount PC is probably the smartest way to go. If your doing just sound, either a rack mount or laptop would do the job very well.
