I'm just fed up now.
After some delays getting the new laptop, it finally arrived today. It's a Sony Vaio PCG 3F1M.
The first Vaio I ordered turned out to be out of stock, from a local supplier, so I ordered the next model up, costing £700.
First I find it has Vista on it rather than the Windows 7 I asked for. I now see that it has a Centrino processor. I don't know if these are still classed as mobile processors, or more to the point, if this is still inferior to other Intel processors. Can anybody enlighten me please? It runs at 2.0GHz. There is also 4GB of DDR2 RAM.
The good news is that I installed VDJ earlier today and it ran flawlessly, even with the ASIO latenncy running at the fastest setting. I then set the "performance" to best quality. This caused very minor glitching, but I suspect I may have been pushing thiings too far. This would have caused the laptops I have been using recently to hang completely on the audio. I returned this setting back to the standard - with the slide bar at the position next to the far left.
When I turned on the laptop just now I discovered that VDJ had lost the ASIO driver I installed earlier, so I reinstalled it. This had to be done three times before it confirmed that the installation was successful. Now I get "Error in ASIO driver" messages when I run VDJ. I am ready for throwing the damn thing through the window. Is there no end to these problems? I must be one of the unlucky ones.
Sorry for being a pain again, but I really don't know what to do.
John
PS - Just checked the DPC latency and it's running constant yellows with spikes well up into the red - without VDJ running. When I run VDJ, the latency seems to be unaffected, so it looks like I have another duff machine.

Sorry people. I am just getting extremely frustrated. It's late and I am very tired and wondering if I will have a properly performing laptop for my gigs this weekend.
I need to remove damn Vista and the 75 programmes which came pre-installed with this laptop. Then I will disable the bluetooth, etc.
My main concern is the Centrino processor and whether this is OK these days, or if it is a sub-standard processor.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi mate, yes centrino is not the best. You will get a far better spec laptop for £700 if you do your homework. I would rather have a better processor and less ram. 2gb is sufficient for vdj.

If its a duo core processor you should be fine. Your only worry if you have a single core. I don't think anything is wrong with your computer you have enough resources looking at your specs. It has to be something in your setting good luck!

OK, thanks for this.
Not much hair left to pull out at the end. I'm sure many of you will understand. Computers are often the easiest things to manage sometimes.
OK on the Centrino. I think I was confusing this chip with a Celeron. The Centrino in the new Vaio is indeed a duo core at 2.0GHz.
I have another Windows 7 on order, 32 bit this time. I will disable some of the drivers, such as Bluetooth, and report back.
You've heard the mottos "whatever can go wrong will go wrong" and "Murphy's Law". Well, I seem to be living my life by far worse laws than these.
Thanks again for you patience.
I WILL get there. (oops - just tempted fate again ;0)

Hi John,
That is a year and a half old laptop and it has Vista on it.
Did the person selling it to you tell you it was not a current model?
You can get a brand new one with a better spec for the same money!

Hmmmmph!
It's definitely brand new, as in 'straight out of the box' but I was unaware that it was such dated machine. Thanks for this.
Just spoken to the shop where I bought this machine and I will be taking it back later.
Off shopping now!

I also think you should be fine, especially since it is a dual core. I ran a single core with no ram for a video card for many years, up until I crashed it because of messing around. Then I couldn't find the correct drivers and moved on to another lappy.

DPC Latency check still gave lots of large red spikes.
In view of the age of this machine I decided to return it (yet another one!) and go for a something newer.
Desparation, no - PANIC! is now setting in as I am less than two days away from two gigs. Will report back shortly - as soon as I have made some changes to the latest laptop - I might be home and dry now. Fingers crossed.
