I have an entire harddrive of video that was ripped in what at the time was the commercial way to rip DVDs with a vp6 codec. I discovered the other day none fo these file swould play in VDJ. After much work I was able to track down and install the vp6 codec. Once installed it failed to work until I removed the ffdshow codec, and set the codec in VDJ to play VAI files through WMP. The problem then came down that all the newer ripped videos now failed to play because they were ripped as avi files using the latest H264 codecs. I tried setting VDJ up with more than one codec WMP for the older ones and just the Video Decoder for the newer ones then none of the AVI videos would play.

Can you have more than one codec for an extension?

No; you should only define one codec in VDJ per extension.

If you're using the WMP decoder then have a look at the DirectShow Filter configuration on your computer as this determines what codec is used for what file.

SBDJ I have read and noted what you wrote. Thank you. Where would I find the Direct Show Filter?

They will exist on your system out of the box, then any other codecs you've installed may well install their own as well.

You can use a utility to view and manage them such as InstalledCodec.

Is there somewhere I can get a list of what codecs and filters ARE suppose to be installed in Vista so as VDJ AND WMP both function correctly with video files?

sorry to say, but it sounds like you backed the wrong codec..

You might want to think about transcoding those files or re-ripping, as from the wiki entry, the VP6 is far from standard, and probably wont be suppported in 5 years..

If your using the popular formats .mp4 .wmv mpeg2 mp3 wma, etc etc you shouldnt need to add any codecs..
its the .AVI files (and some .mpg) where they were encoded with "non-standard" codecs, that you may have to download for..

and what codecs YOU need at that point depends on what YOU are using for video/audio files..
