Sujet: Loss of Database (Thanks to Sound Limiter)

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

I was playing a mobile function last Sunday where the venue had a sound limiter which was set to 95dB (I can talk louder than that...)

Anyway, as the guest of honour arrived, I played Happy Birthday but turned it up a bit too loud and the limiter kicked in and turned off the power to all the sockets I was using...

No problem for the lappy as the battery stopped this from powering down, however my external hard drives obviously power cycled.

My audio drive came back online no problem. VDJ kept reading from the database and all my cue points etc were intact.

My video drive however was a different story. As the power went I was in the middle of loading a video, so only the first 40 seconds of the loaded. When the power resumed, VDJ completely ignored the drive and the database. I had to re-add the favourite to my browser and I lost the ability to search for video - confirmed by unticking audio and karaoke from the search options.

Now as far as I am aware, VDJ only loads the database for a drive on startup. This means situations like the one above would require me to restart VDJ - not good in the middle of a gig! Or maybe it was because the drive power cycled whilst loading that video that caused VDJ to loose the database.

I've just checked the database and looking at it in more detail I can see that the LastPlay values in my database stop at the time the drive cycled. This means that even when I played videos later in the evening it did not even attempt to write to the database on that drive.

Is there no way VDJ could detect a drive being added and check to see for the existence of a database? Or add an option re-check for a database?

This would mean thumb drives and multiple DJ's sharing the same install for sets could add and remove drives on the fly.

Cheers,

Roy

If I'm not wrong you have to expand the "my computer" in the folders window. Just click on "my computer" few times and the new drive will appear.

Tried that, the drive appeared but the database was not re-scanned!

Roy,

Because the drive didn't comeback in a standard way VirtualDJ may have had a problem with seeing it.

VirtualDJ does permit hotswap ... but in your case you were hotswapping 2 drives at the same time.

If you test this at home ... just unplug the USB cord from the drive let things settle, then plug it back in. Things should comeback normal. But then try and recreate your situation and do 2 drives at the same time ... things get a little confused and maybe only 1 or none or if you are luck both may appear.

Chris,

Thanks for that... So of I had inplugged and re-plugged that drive in it probably would have sorted itself out...

Possibly ... but you know computers ... sometimes they take on a temperament of their own :)

I've decided to invest in a small UPS. They're only £40 ($60) and this will prevent my hard drives from disappearing on me...

Plus, on the basis I'm planning to upgrade to a VMS4 and run it from the PSU, this should prevent me from loosing that in the event of a power outage...
