Hi All
I use virtual DJ on a laptop. This laptop is hooked up to a mixer and is the only input (Mixer Slider to one side)> My question is if i buy some DJ headphones and plug them into the mixer (headphone socket), will i be able to monitor and mix one deck on virtual DJ whilst other is playing. My friend is saying it wont work as you need two inputs on mixer to do that and only way round it is to plug headphones into laptop and set it up through virtual DJ.
So whos right, and what will work best?

It will only work if you have two sound cards or preferably a dedicated DJ sound card such as Numark DJIO or Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ.
This allows you to choose the External Mixer option in VirtualDJ's sound configuration so that you can output each virtual deck to a separate channel on your mixer. This will allow you to headphone pre-listen and manipulate the volume, EQ and gain of each channel from the mixer just as you can for traditional CD or vinyl decks.
If you only have one sound card (The one built into your laptop), then you will not be able to headphone pre-listen, unless you use the mono split option, which will only give you MONO sound.

You'll be able to cue/mix any other device on the mixer just not Virtual DJ unless you either use "split" mode which outputs deck 1 on the left channel and deck 2 on the right. You can then convert the single channel back to stereo RCA's.
You'll end up with a mono system, but is that really a problem?
The alternative is to invest in a 4 in/4 out soundcard and not use the laptop soundcard and then go directly from that to your mixer as two dedicated channels.
Cheers,
Roy

Thanks for both replies. If i were to invest in that sound card how would it work (forgive me not been using this stuff long)
At moment I have 2 Speakers which connect to amp. I then have phono connections (2 output) from amp which go into mixer. Then I finaly have a phono out cable which on other end is 3.5mm jack (goes into headphone port on laptop)
All works great, (With of course Slider to one side of input).
So where does the sound card fit and what cables would i need.
Many thanks again.
Dave :)

A proper DJ sound card such as Numark DJIO or Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ will give you two separate outputs, usually RCA phono. You would run two suitable cables (E.g: 2x RCA to 2x RCA) from the sound card to two separate channels on your mixer (One into the channel you are using now for your laptop, and the other into another spare channel.)
Then you would set VirtualDJ's output to External Mixer mode in CONFIG -> Sound Setup
The sound from each deck will then be output to the two channels on your mixer, and you can use the mixer crossfader to crossfade between them. By plugging headphones into the mixer, you can pre-listen by pressing the CUE or PFL button on the appropriate channel.

Thankyou JP.

I think this is the one you mean and way I work it is...
1. Usb connection from laptop to sound card
2. Output 1 (soundcard) to input 1 (Mixer)
3. Output 2 (soundcard) to input 2 (Mixer)
4. Output (L @ R) (Mixer) to amp
5. Amp to speakers.
So no audio jack needed then from laptop to mixer?
Thanks
Dave

Yes, that is the Numark DJIO sound card and the above is correct for how you would connect it up. You do not need an audio jack from the laptop with this setup (The sound card in your computer is not used.)

Last Question... I Promise
When I have this setup and is working, during the setup we have told VDJ to use external Mixer.
My Last question is that, I only have a basic mixer does that take all of the functionality from VDJ and place it on mixer. Can I still use the laptop to add tunes and drop samples and effects whilst using the mixer for volume and slider input or not?
Thanks

No, you cannot control any aspect of the software from an external DJ mixer unless it is MIDI capable.
A standard audio DJ mixer can manipulate the analogue audio signals from VirtualDJ only (Volume, crossfade, EQ's, gain, etc.) as it would for CD or vinyl decks (NOTE: The on-screen controls on the VirtualDJ skin will not move, and this is not necessary with a hardware audio DJ mixer.)
If you wish to trigger effects, samples, etc. then you will need to upgrade to a MIDI capable mixer, or purchase a MIDI controller (See http://www.virtualdj.com/products/hardware.html )
The cable above is a standard RCA lead. You would need two of these cables to connect the DJIO to your mixer.

Thanks so much
So to some up I can set this up. Us the external mixer to control Volume, crossfade, EQ's, gain, etc. and still use the laptop to do the rest.
That Correct?
Just so im sure :)

This might be a bit late but maybe a USB DJ Mixer might be worth a look. Most have built in sound card to output to amp so all u need to do is have 2 spare usb ports in which to plug in from your laptop to the mixer using standard usb cables (most laptops have 3 to 4 usb ports) then output from mixer to amp and thats it plus you get stereo output. Hope that helps in some way if not my bad.
Cheers

I hope I'm not too late on this one but you seem to know what you are talking about so maybe I can get some help.
I have the DJ/IO and I run that to my mixer and while using the NUMARK TOTAL CONTROL system, I can hear my songs in cue but when I turn up the PH VOL on the TOTAL CONTROL...it turns up the music on the speakers and it plays over them. I DO NOT WANT THIS. What would I be doing wrong??
Thanks for the help.
