I own a Hardware DMX controller, but I have found that software controllers are much more efficient for me. I use Freestyler (freeware) http://users.telenet.be/freestylerdmx/
It does require a small hardware purchase (USB to DMX doggle). I recommend the ENTTEC - DMX USB PRO interface. You will also probably need a 5 pin to 3 pin adapter.
To summarize my suggestions for what you should get:

I have also built my own USB to DMX controller following instructions here:
http://diylightanimation.com/index.php?board=7.0 and it also works with Freestyler (much cheaper option if you are handy with a soldering iron). :p
It is very comparable to the DMX USB PRO.

It does list Freestyler as compatible software...so it should work, but it doesn't list any comparable specs. My experience is only using the DIY version and ENTTEC as previously mentioned, and without comparable specs (in fact no specs), I can't make any discernments about this ebay product.
But for starters, I'd say give it a shot. If you decide you want more stability in the future, you can always upgrade. However, if you want don't want to guess, I'd go with a proven device and go straight to the ENTTEC - DMX USB PRO.

Hey,
I would like to echo sirwesley. I have the Enttec USB PRO and use Freestyler as well. I'm running 6 ADJ Mega Bar RGB 50s, 6 ADJ PAR36 cans, 1 ADJ REVO III, 1 ADJ Starball DMX and a Microh Bar II. Freestyler is just great. I use the sound to light function built in to Freestyler as well as the Audiobox application as well. (no longer available) This combination gives me so many sound to light variations. I love it. Go get it.

I use ADJ My DMX and it is great. You have the profiles there for the lights and you can preview everything. You can download new profiles as they come out. I know it costs more but for what it does I don't think it's expensive. I also have a chauvet Obey 40 and it's a lot easier and flexible in my opinion to use the My DMX. It even shows a picture of how to set the dip swithces of each light (in case the have dip switches). I use and old pc laptop to run it.

this might sound stupid but all of this software are we guys running it on the same computer as vj or are you guys use back up computers...

It is reccomended to use a second (backup) PC or laptop. I use a small Asus eepc (Netbook) with touchscreen , Enttec LightFactory Software and Enttec Pro USB DMX Interface to run my DMX lights.
I have tried Freestyler. Free but not good enough for me. ShowXpress (Chauvet) and MyDMX (AmericanDJ) are top for me, but they both need their own USB dongle (allmost 500$).

I recommend a dedicated computer for lighting, but I do also make this laptop my backup computer for DJing as well (which I also recommend having handy anyways).

Recently I purchased Enttec DMXiS software with interface. I don't normally use VDJ however I wish to change to VDJ Pro7. I was told Enttec DMXiS has VST and will work in conjunction with VDJ Pro 7 thereby not having to use 2 computers or changing program on the one computer, just switch to effect and woala, Enttec DMXiS is active to use to program a song with Enttec to trigger certain lighting fixtures at certain times. I thought, I've been ripped off before and don't wish for it to happen again, therefore I managed to get VDJ Pro 7 on a temporary basis to try this out. I tried. It doesn't work ??. I did what the installation prompts ask me still no good . I uninstalled and reinstalled still no good. The .dll file appears in the plugins but when there it no activate button. Does anyone know what's happening ? Do I need to register before this will work ? Are you sure that registration will make it work ? I do wish to change to VDJ but there's no point if this doesn't work.

Hi,
Your best bet is to use a seperate program with your Entec, as even when VDJ had DMX (and I'm not sure it still works) I think it was certain Sunlite boxes only. It is possible to use Freestyler and have it integrated to Virtual DJ for triggering and control, all within Virtual DJ without switching.
VenueMagic also works with Virtual DJ and supports the Entec IIRC.

Please keep your communications in one place, it's far easier to track. 5-6 different threads and 2 support tickets makes it very difficult for us to help you.
A couple of other point: VST is an audio effect. If there is a VST supplied with your software for audio integration - say triggering of an external piece of software it's (a) a messy solution, and (b) the responsibility of the VST author to make it work.
This information regarding the compatibility of the Entec was not supplied to you by us was it?

I really do apologise, I was ripped off again. I place the threads in different places because I wasn't sure it was getting through. Again my apologies. No , the information was not supplied by you guys, it was supplied by sweetwater in America where I purchased the software in good faith.. They said it would integrate well as it was with VST, I was told it would appear as a plugin and could then be used in conjunction with VDJ Pro 7. When I paid, received and installed it didn't work like they said. I queried this, lots of head scratching was going on, a few emails back and forth, eventually I was told, contact Virtual DJ. They'll tell you why it won't work, must be their program. ?? Do you see my point now about NOT spending more money on stuff I need and happy to pay for, AS LONG AS IT WORKS ????!!! NOW WHAT ??????

Oh I forgot , can anyone out there tell me or point me in some kind of direction : I wish to use VDJ in conjunction with some kind of DMX software where I don't have to have 2 computers to run 2 pieces of software. I want to program a song to trigger lighting fixtures at certain points, save the file for re use next time without going in and out of program's ???? And without having to pay a fortune.

Your options are:
Freestyler (software is free, will work with the Entec)
VenueMagic (software is not free, will work with the Entec)
ShowXPress/SweetLight (software is free, needs their own dongle)
All three of those softwares will integrate with Virtual DJ, but require Virtual DJ Pro Full and a plugin.

Try Freestyler DMX.
SBDJ has wrote two wonderfull plug-ins for it.
However you will have to purchase VirtualDJ PRO in order to use them.

If you read the DMXis manual (like I just did) then it explains how DMXis works as a VST plugin.
They specifically mention DAW software (Cubase, Ableton Live etc.) and say that you have to create a MIDI track in the DAW s/w and place MIDI notes on it, which then trigger DMXis. You can't do that with VDJ.
BUT if DMXis can run from a MIDI clock input then you may be able to get it running. VDJ can be set (via the djcel registry tool) to ouput a MIDI clock signal based on the beat grid markers of each song. You'll probably also need a util called LoopBe to route the MIDI clock output of VDJ to the input of DMXis (if it can accept MIDI clock).
