Sujet: Sound Limiters Killing Computers!!!

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

Hallo folks.

Ok...wonder if someone can clarify...

In the UK on the mobile scene we often come across venues which have a sound limiter device installed. To those of you uneducated in every mobile jocks WORST NIGHTMARE, these little shits cut power to your entire setup if you go too loud and sustain the level for longer than about 10 seconds. Not only does it measure what's coming out of your amps, these dirty little things are also affected by crowd noise...so you basically have to tell your crowd to enjoy themselves quietly!!! As crazy as it may sound, these things are installed in venues in residential areas to cut noise pollution to a minimum. They are installed by the Environmental Health Board after complaints and such about excessive noise levels.

Anyway...i had a guy out a few weeks ago doing a gig where after 2 tracks the damn thing cut his gear out altogether. He couldn't get the gig machine up and running again...so much so that he had to pack up early and go home...:o(

As it happens, i got his machine back and powered up and it seemed to be ok. Everything was working normally and for his last few gigs things have been fine.

So he's doing a wedding last night at a venue with a sound limiter in it and phones me to tell me that the computer was not booting up after randomly shutting down last night. The machine was NOT connected to the sound limiter at the venue but instead the power seemed to be strangely cut. He couldn't get the machine going again and the switch on the back of the power supply was not lighting up. Eventually after about ten minutes or so he got it going again and made it to the end of the night with no further issue. Thank god...you know? ;o)

So...my question is this...Do you think the initial power outage has caused something to go wrong with the hardware of his machine? It's a fairly new machine...only built from scratch a couple of months ago.

Secondly...does anyone know of any computer hardware monitoring software that may highlight potential hardware problems...i dunno...voltages or something or some sort of log on a machine that might give an indication of some sort as to what caused the power outage?

I don't wanna have to fork out AGAIN to rebuild from scratch, but unless i can narrow it down to one particular piece of hardware, then i guess i'm gonna have to.

Opinions and advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers...and keep spinnin'...(",)

Its pretty rare for a power outage to wreck equipment.. especially computers.. (hard drives are usually the most likely thing to get hurt as the 'needle' on a hard drive can cause failure from hitting the platter)

Speakers, thats another story (speakers can be blown by a power outage as some older amps would allow a large 'spike' when the other equipment went down, but its pretty rare now adays)

Do a google search for "Furman power conditioner", many DJ's use these Pro pieces of equipment. (an entire audio system can be protected by one, and it provides clean optimal power)

besides that, the only other option I can think of is a UPS.. not very popular with DJ's because of the weight, but would solve a few problems..
