Sujet: Seeking your thoughts on Dell Inspiron 9100...

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

I've come across a used Dell Inspiron 9100.
I know that it is big and heavy, it contains desktop CPU and chipset so it is bulky but should be more powerful.
many things I've read on interwebz state it is very similar to XPS series minus the silver trim, Giganet, and I'm sure the video card is a slight down grade.

I'm familiar with this PC from my IT support work but have no experience using it for mixing. So I covet your input; if you've used this lappy please share your experience.

Thanks,

T

It appears no one has used this lappy. : )

I bought it after plenty of reading, I'll give a quick review once it gets here and I beat on it for a while.

Haha the memories... had this one a LONGGG time ago. Bought it 2004 i think? I used it for 4 years, 2 years of VDJ and it worked well. 2.4 ghz pent 4 CPU was ok, but it got awfully hot and was only single core. But it ran vdj 5.2 flawlessly audio only. It had intergrated graphics so no video i think.

Specs on the computer?

P4 3.2GHz HT
1GB Ram
Intel 865 chipset
ATI Radeon Mobility 9700, 128 MB

It's definitely a dinosaur but I was looking for an old desktop replacement to run XP Pro. I had an Inspiron 5100 some years ago and it did well so I thought this Dell might be worth a go. Picked it up on ebay for $200.
I hear ya on the video, I'll test it out but I'm not holding my breath, this lappy will be for audio and back up for bigger gigs when I use a rack mounted system for video. But I've done video with similar cards with no problems. Maybe the bios will let me steal a little RAM for video. ; )

Lamont, thanks for your input. I'm glad to hear you had no big issues with this particular lappy.

pleased with perfomance so far. Laptop has run video all day (7 hours so far), VOB files, no glitches, CPU reaches about 65% while playing video and loading video on other deck, runs at about 30% rest of the time, videos load in about 10 to 15 seconds depending on size, video quality is great through DVI, will test s-video and vga tonight, no issues with heat, found a good skin for 1680x1050 native resolution, it weighs a ton and the power supply is bigger than my foot but it performs and thats the main thing.

can't beat a audio/video lappy for $225.00
