I used the trial of Virtual DJ with my Technics SL-1210MK5Gs.
I used Serato with my Technics SL-1210MK5Gs.
Difference? NOT MUCH.
As a professional DJ, I am surrounded by people that say, WHY ARE YOU USING VIRTUAL DJ?! SERATO MAN!
Its just ridiculous man.. I tried scratching on both, and I am confident to say that the difference is not very immense. Anything I do on serato, I can do VDJ just fine, when it comes to timecode. Virtual DJ is a program that I am looking forward to purchase and spread the word about. After all the features of Virtual DJ can top Serato any day (especially VDJScript).
However, when I buy this software I want the perfect OS for it. Looking around the forums, its either:
1. Windows 7 64-Bit
2. Windows XP
What's your opinion?
Thanks.

It depends on:
* What spec your system is
* What video card you have
* What OS has the most stable drivers for your hardware
* What you are comfortable with
IMHO

unfortunately ......
SBDJ's answer is a very good one ......
doesn't make a nice sound bite or bumper sticker .......
i have 4 systems , one XP (haven't used in over a year , probably has 5.?) , 1 Vista (home prem 64 bit) (6.1.1 ....
no matter what I just can't seem to get my confidence in this system above 95% and that is NOT a dig at VDJ but it
IS a dig at 64 bit windows.....) unfortunately now and for the near future this is my gig rig , it does video with multiple
simultaneous fx PLUS FireText which is another significant background process (es) , i have 2 Windows 7 systems they
are both 64 bit also ....one is a laptop with 6.0.8 and the other is a desktop with 6.1 .......
video was much easier with XP
soundcards are much easier in Vista and 7 .....or at least that has been my experience

Thanks for the answers.
So my conclusion is that it is based on my personal opinion. I plan on doing video later on during my career, but I will stick to audio/timecode for now... chucknorris you stated that video is much easier with Windows XP.
I think I will just install a dual-boot for Windows 7 and Windows XP, and see how that goes.
Thanks again!

I just finished spinning at a bar that is owned by one of the bigger, more renowned clubs here in Singapore. One of the resident deejays from that club was present and when he saw me setting up my controllers and running vdj, he immediately asked me "Are u gonna be using VDJ?". To which I replied "YES". Well he didnt say anything about it, but after an hour or so he started becoming curious, and asked me to show him some of the features of VDJ. I went a little more in depth and explained how it would work with serato timecodes as well as a ton of other controllers. He was quite surprised. According to him, he always thought VDJ was a very basic software with a lot of glitches.
Thats the problem with the industry, well at least here in Singapore. They get something everyone else is using and swear by it. Things change, new products come in, and just because it might not have been excellent in the past that doesnt mean that improvements have not been made. I think VDJ's track record (no pun intended) speaks for itself, what with winning best djing software and all.

I really respect people who stand up and make their own decisions.
Sure you hear the hype just like the rest of us do and just as many losers buy Serato thinking that makes them a pro dj when it doesn't, just like an image or ego doesn't.
You appear to be using an older trial version btw, we are up to 6.1 version now.
If you want the best experience, we recommend using that one.

Thats so true! I laughed when I found out that they started to add Hotcue to Serato. Everyone started to get excited, and Virtual DJ had this feature for so long. I feel like every time Serato releases an update, it adds features that Virtual DJ already has. If you look at the bigger picture, it's serato that is behind us, not Virtual DJ behind serato. Yes, their timecode engine is better, but thats about it. Their GUI isn't even that nice looking, IMO.
When I seen the "My Working Mac" thread and the pictures, I was like man.. wait until a serato user sees this. Everything that DJs can do on Serato we can do on Virtual DJ too. Its just that you 'look' more legit if you have serato. But at the same time, they don't realize that Virtual DJ is in fact a better solution for DJs.
BTW I have downloaded the latest Trial. (v6.1)

Ok, now I use serato to much time for playing videos is not better than VDJ same as the video-sl is rotten, you can use your audio interface serato and play quietly using VDJ, noting that the software only the VDJ interface support SL1 still not having support for SL3.
If you have the SL3 interface will not work with VDJ software.

You are spot on. There is very little difference when it comes to scratching in vdj and serato. What contributes to ensuring its responsive is the audio interface which I never took advice from others on this forum until now. Yesterday I bought a Torq conectiv interface and sold my audio 4 dj interface (which is sloppy with timecodes). All I have to say is Serato who? Well I see you have an SL 1 which is very responsive with vdj so you're good to go. I will really recommend you do purchase vdj because as you said, rane has been taking Atomix's ideas and implementing them slowly by slowly. I am unbiased and think they are two powerful softwares but vdj has more features and are ahead of the game IMO. Welcome my friend.

I think one of the advanced features Serato has is cool video transitions with similar to hardware video mixer effects like chroma-key. VDJ doesn't have this right now as far as I know.

@djfilosoff or anybody in need of some dope video!!
I posted these a while back in the Plugins section, I think there are about 60/70 different video effects and there is even the "Chroma-key" you mentioned, enjoy!!

In 99 cases out of 100 every VDJ-bashing Serato user hasn't even touched Virtual DJ. Ever. Perhaps some decade-old pirate version at best..or should I say at worst.
Posté Sun 01 Aug 10 @ 11:35 am
i used to shit on VDJ back in 2005 but i also only ever seen people using it with a laptop and a plug coming from there crappy on board sound card. no TC or midi or anything. thne i needed to start doing video and shopped around tested a few programs including VSL and well i have been using CUE/VDJ for over a year. i'll admit i got CUE not realizing it was basically VDJ with a dif branding. i actually didn't try VDJ because of what i seen before so i was really thrown back when i realized they were the same program. its funny to see some of my fellow (SSL) djs in my area try VDJ or see me use it and say i gotta get this. LOL.

So how come My VDJ Crashes all the Time while I'm the middle of a Gig while the Dance floor is at it fullest? I've used VDJ ever since it was Call Atomix The Purple Program Ya remember that; I've Mixing MP3s ever since I was 16, I'm 25 now and a local resident DJ at a couple of the Clubs around town, Virtual DJ Crashed on me Last night...I'm Getting tired of the Glitches and Crashes in Virtual DJ, Serato/ Traktor seem to be more reliable...So tell what to do guys think; I'm losing faith in Virtual DJ
Posté Sun 15 Aug 10 @ 5:55 pm
Moretta, this forum is full of information on how to make Virtual DJ crash free. If you still can't figure out how to do it then it's not VDJ's fault.
Posté Sun 15 Aug 10 @ 8:41 pm
Or just post the Crash Report so maybe the teamers can disect it and figure out why it crashed, thats why its there................

It's up to you to decide what is best for you. The only way you can do that is to try it for yourself. There are many people who swear by this and swear by that. Well guess what industry is just that, an industry and people from company A will recommend company A, company B will recommend company B, and so on and so on. If you only explore one avenue that is your choice, but at the end of the day only one person can decide what is best for you! Some are good, some are bad, and this will never change no matter what gear you have or what software you purchase. I say stand up for yourself and what you believe in. Ignore the company goons and choose your own fate. Don't be afraid to express yourself and your music in ways others can't imagine. Free yourself from the ignorant politics and propaganda fashioned by branded loyalists and forge your own path.
