I'm a beginner DJ looking to buy some actual DJ equipment. I'm looking to buy turntables that can play mp3s but are also big enough and capable of scratching effectively. I was wondering if these even existed because they aren't vinyl. I'm also looking into get a new mixer that is simple and reliable. My price range is $200-$300. Any help is appreciated

how many are you looking to get?
is that price for the set or each?
im not sure i would even recommend a table that can play mp3
and start out with a direct drive table.
me personally im not a technics person but alot will recommend..i say the stanton str series. they are direct and durable..i started with the stanton belts and they do the job but the directs are way better for scracthn.

I would like 2 turntables. I was doing some mroe research and found that programs like Serato can convert your mp3s in order to play them using your vinyls. I was wondering what the key differences between a direct drive table and a belt drive table were.

I'd get my LEGAL copy of VDJ first. Then save up for some equipment.

I have a copy my friend got me. im guessing its illegal but for now it works. I just wanna scratch without a vinyl. I was lookin into the numark CDQ CD turntable but thats kinda expensive

i dont use serato so not sure what you mean by convert them to use the vinyls, however VDJ reads mp3 just as serato would. as well as VDJ uses serato vinyls.

If you want an easy and cheap way to learn to scratch dj, how about this
http://www.ionaudio.com/discoverdj and you'll need a decent low latency sound card to run it properly like this http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/dj/audio-2-dj/ (and you can keep the soundcard when you upgrade your other kit).
or for something a little more pro, and with the sound card built in, how about http://www.numark.com/idj3 Not sure that's been released yet.
Not exactly what you asked for, but much easier to set up, and for the money they have pretty good scratching capabilities according to a review i read on skratchworx http://www.skratchworx.com/news3/comments.php?id=1376
Hope that helps.
