I like his speaker system! Where can I get one of those? HAHA! These wannabe Dj's are killing our business. People dont seem to care that you get what you pay for!

Am I missing something? I don't see how you can tell he has pirated software. If so, then yes, they should probably get square with the good folks at Atomix.
As for the rates and equipment; don't hate. These guys get business and apparently keep business. That's evidence of a good product.
If they can do it for less and still give a good show why shouldn't they.
I've heard some say that the elitist attitudes of DJ's concerning gear, cliques and music genres has been just as bad for the industry, making it hard for a little guy to get a chance. The big-heads of some DJ's have caused promoters, events planners and club owners to find other ways to entertain their patrons. Or they go with a lower budget DJ figuring the lower price indicates a new-comer to the game who may be a little more flexible not only in pay but format and attitude.
just my 2 cents.

Thanks, you said it even better than I could. I am a little guy and trying to make it. I can mix well and do a pretty good job overall. I may not be perfect and that is why I am charging a bit less, to get shows and gain experience.
I have quite a respectable system (NS7, QSC K system, VDJ pro, etc) and don't think I am better than anybody else. I go to a gig, do the best I can and hope to make a name for myself and my buisness.
Me charging $500 for a wedding and $200 ish for house parties, has nothing to do with me trying to undercut or kill the industry. I need to get work, gain experience and improve for the better economic times.
That is my 2 cents as a PAID Premium VDJ Pro and Serato member. With Legit music, hours of daily practice and $8k into my sound system.
You know what assuming dose...

"Economies of scale" states the more of something you produce the cheaper it becomes. I think this applies to DJ's as well. A saturation of the market can only lead to one thing and that is lower prices. I have to take the side of everyone else on this one because I'm new. When your new to the game you can't just start charging top dollar when no one knows who you are. No one will book you! I started playing house parties for free. Then I made some contacts and started charging a little here and there. Made some more contacts, started charging more and buying better gear. Now My setup is almost complete and guess what. I will still load all my gear up and blow the doors of a house party till the cops come for free! I didn't start to DJ for the money, I did it for my love of music. There is a term for people who are only in it for the money and they are called SELL OUTS!

Well you can call most of us sell outs then. Sure we all love the music and love to play it, but it is rare I get a gig where I get to play only what I want to hear. My "job" is to spend time preparing for music gigs, driving to the gig, unloading a ton of equipment and setting it all up, Dealing with some people that may have had a few too many, distractions, requests that I would have to be crazy to play, all while keeping the music rolling all night with no dead air, reading the room, rotating the dance floor, working the mic, etc etc.... and then tear it all back down load it up and drive home. So yeah, I expect to get paid for the services I provide. The biggest perk of it is, I enjoy myself at 9 out of ten gigs I do.
I think we all start off because we like the music and love to make people happy and see them have fun, but after a while it becomes a job.

Ads like this dont bother me. I still get bookings. If you want to get the word out, You need to make Demo Cds and give them out. You make a new one every month.. This talk more than just throwing a free house party or advertising on cragslist. Too many People saying i am a dj... Big deal.. Make demos.. Demo's talk. When people know you are good, They will call you and keep calling you for more. Famous DJ's got the level of where they are now because it all started with making demos. When you give out the cd's, make sure you have contact information on it. Open a facebook artist account, myspace artist acount etc. We all have a passion for DJ ing and we also want to get to the top. Heres the ladder, Climb..

Ads like this don't bother me... they make me laugh. People call me and ask for a quote and then their jaw drops because my price is three times higher than the other company I tell them you get what you pay for, that they need to up their budget if they want a good quality DJ and tell them "best wishes on your wedding day".
Posté Thu 09 Sep 10 @ 2:03 am
Ad's like this used to bother me but not anymore, at the end of the day I'm booked every week for twice as much as them and playing at really good event's. I don't even send out demo's, just been out each week is enough to keep it going.
2 way's to get booked, either by being cheap or by being good! it's always been like that, after just 6 months in the business I new where I wanted to be. It's a respect thing, self respect that is.

okay yes doing free gigs for people you knw fair enough but to do gigs for people you dont know for free are you mad... i guess you must have another job or your parents pay for your gear mate.... this is the problem over her in ireland is people not know how much time and money goes into becoming a "DJ".....
lets get down to basics here the dj is the life and soul of the party it is up to him to get people up and dancing and having the time of there lives each and every nite they come out that is what brings people to the pubs.......... it doesnt matter what type of dj your are dance hip hop or what ever once you can safely say that every1 danced there asses off every nite job done...
now it doesnt take a genuis to play the top 40 hits for two hours and get people dancing that is not a dj..... a dj must build a atmosphere make sure the lighten is prefect the room temp is prefect and the bar owners tills are full.... that im my opinion is what a dj does... now if you are telling me that you will do that for free than you are a better man than me......
guys this is a professional job... do you think that because theres are so many doctors in an area that they will lower their prices eh i think not......
and it is up to us as proffesional to make sure that our customers get every cent they pay for.... and EXPLAIN TO THEM WHAT WE AS DJS CAN DO FOR THEM AND WHY WE CHARGE WHAT WE Do........ it people who dont know what the job intails are the ones ripping the hole out of the prices.....

It comes down to that you have to start some where. 8 years ago, I did not start out making what I make now at my full time job. I play house parties for free for some of my good friends that can return the favor. I already have a FB fan page and am currently posting demos and have for the last couple months. I am learning, so they are basic, but I am "on the ladder" so to speak and I will get there.
I am lucky enough to make a good salary at my main job, so I can do this for the fun and the love of all kinds of music. I guess I just had a problem with the "software pirate" generalization, based off of his price. We are not trying to take your work away. We just need to find some of our own. I am sure all of us started out taking sombody elses job with a lower price. I am also sure that sombody will under cut me many times in the future as well.

I'm not so sure what you are complaining about with this guy's add; I clicked the link and followed another link to his web site.
I don't think his rates are unreasonable.
Basic party @ 49/hr
SO for a basic DJ and sound system for 5 hours that would be $245.00
That is a little low but answer me this:
Does your day job pay you almost 50 bucks an hour?
I can't comment on Sweet 16 parties; they are very very rare in Canada.
His wedding prices aren't so low either:
69/hour
So if he set's up at 4 pm and has cocktail/dinner music/dance till 1am that's 9 hours
69*9=621.00
I would guess that judging by his sound gear he either built it himself or bought older stuff. Only nit picking i would do about his sound gear is to loose the dual 15 car sub box and get a real pro audio subwoofer.
I noticed a nice pioneer cdj800; those aren't cheap.
The main reason guys like him are hard competition are because they are CHEAP, cheap with purchasing gear, small one man operation, probably out of his garage, very low overhead.
I suspect if his City's Chamber of Commerce looked into him, he'd have to raise his rates to cover city business licencing, insurance, and taxes.
Bottom line is this if you're gonna become a mobile operator:
Forget being a DJ first
Be a businessman or salesman first; DJ second. Get the sale, then rock the house.
Create your own uniqueness and market the hell out of it.
SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL.
If I could afford to hire a professional salesman I would, or a marketing firm to keep me busy all year long.

Part time job's tend to pay more, you would expect more from being a DJ because it's un sociable hours and you would expect more been a self employed contractor especially when theres expensive equipment involved.
PS,
I know people that earn more than me working during the week and DJing by simply working in there normal 40hr job, you would be surprised how much people earn they are just smart and keep quite.
