On tuesday i went to a job interview for a radio station here in Trinidad. Carried my equipment and they told me only serato and how its an industry standard. Is that really so with radio station in the United States.

Radio stations in the U.S. do not hire DJs who carry gear. You submit a recording and, if they accept you, when you play out the venue is responsible for having the proper equipment. The DJ never knows what they will walk into. Tunrtables, CD players, what ever. In some cases the contracts state what equipment is to be used.

The term 'industry standard' is over-used.
There are certain items that are more common than others in particular fields. Turntablist DJs who like using vinyl will say Serato Scratch Live is the best DJ software - but bear in mind that it's only 'best' for their particular style.
Other DJs will say that Traktor is the best - but they are DJs who like to add loops and samples to their mixing, and use four 'decks'.
As for radio stations, most will have their own equipment permanently wired in, which you would be trained on prior to going on air.
What the equipment consists of will vary depending on the age and budget of the station.

I don't know about the Other U.S states but In NYC, The majority of the radio station dj's are using serato. You have Hot 97 fm, La Mega 97.1, Power 105, 92.3 Now FM & 105.9 fm. Z100 fm. The setup are 1200's or CDJ's & Maybe (But rare) a Denon hc4500 controller. Many djs like using turntables but they are not turntablist. A Turntablist is a DJ that focuses mostly on scratching Like DJ QBert. DMC finalist type for competition. The Djs here show up with just the laptop because everything is supplied. You bring your own needles basically, Timecode records or cd's & Headphones.

Everywhere I see in LA everyone just shows up with their laptop, usually a mac.

So what they are saying is that they will hire a guy that can suck as a dj and use serato vs a good dj that uses vdj. (and i'm not trying to say serato djs suck) I just don't get why people bash VDJ.
Thats like hiring a carpenter based on what brand of tools he uses and not on the quality of his work he does. SILLY

SILLY hits the nail on the head, right in the middle. I can't get involved in such childish arguments. I usually tell them to suck my headphone, and keep it moving.

That is by their (the DJs) choice....NOT the radio station standards and practices. Most PDs don't know the difference....

it's the battle of all ages, Serato vs the rest of the Dj's software.
Just because I don't use serato, I was told that I am not a real Dj, oh, and the fact that I still use cd's makes me not a real DJ.
Many of the Dj's that I've met that use serato, tend to be closed minded about any other dj program. They swear by serato and nothing will change their mind. The bottom line, it's all a matter of preference.
If a club owner, promoter, or radio station don't hire you because you do not use serato, then it's not worth your time showing your skills with close minded people to begin with.
Ive been to clubs where, so called, Dj's use nothing but serato, and they freaking suck like you can not even imagine. Many, of these so called dj's, will scratch the heck out the song just to dump another song on top of the other, instead of beat matching, or at least blend the songs in. These are the serato people that I've met, and yes of course, I've also met Dj's that use serato and are amazing Dj's, but let us be honest, Serato does not make the dj, and yet some people tend to believe that it is Serato and or nothing else.

Its easiest to buy a second hand SL1 so you can say you have serato then turn up and rock the house with vdj, leaving everyone wondering how you did all that with serato ;)

When I will open my own night club I will not hire any DJ who uses Serato. Ha-ha!
