Hello all. So I was just wondering if there was a program anyone knows of that will allow you to lock folders but that will also let VDJ access to the files within. I wouldn't mind letting someone borrow one of my hard drives for a night if I knew that they couldn't copy my 15 years of music, music video & karaoke collecting. I tried a program called "folder lock" on a test folder on a thumb drive but VDJ couldn't access it without unlocking the folder which kinda defeats the purpose. Cool program if you wanna just lock something for personal use and I can lock my hard drive so that if (insert sound of me knocking on wood) someone stole my hard drive they couldn't get to my files and you can save a version of the program on the external drive so that you can unlock it with other computers.
Thanx For Any Help
BTW, I'm running 32-bit Vista

The only way I know that you can achieve this is by manually setting Access Rights on NTFS formatted hard-drives. However this process is something that only users with good computer knowledge should try since it can "lock" you out of your drive if you don't know what you're doing!
If you have that kind of knowledge let me know and I will give you a quick guide...

Any help would be great. I'm pretty good with computers. No degree, but I have taken a few classes and I'm the guy whom all of my friends and family go to when they have a problem. and my hard drive is formatted NTFS.
Thank You

I made a small Tool for my own use..... Try it if you like:
http://www.jakovski.de/delphi/USB_Schreibschutz_080609.zip
Connect your ext. HD to the computer, when your drive is recognized activate the tool and enable write protection.
New connected USB devices will be readonly now. Don't forget to enable usb writing befor exiting the programm.

Thanks for your help. I don't think I'm gonna mess with any of this on a Friday with a 3 wedding weekend ahead of me but I will let you know on Monday how everything works out.
Thanx Again

He doesn't want to make them read only, he wants to prevent copying.
There are several software solutions out there but nothing perfect. My statement is always this:
If they can play the file, they can copy it.

The tools disables writing to any usb devices after started. That means he can 100% use his ext. drive and work with it.
But if someone tries to copy files they have to write it anywhere - normaly to an usb storage. But this is, because of the tool, read only ;-))
I don't think that they can backup his complete harddisk just over the UMTS / Network connection ;-)

He's lending someone his HD. They plug it into their computer and copy it to the internal HD, no problem there. You can't force them to run your application either unfortunately. What about copying to Firewire, eSATA, iSCSI, SAN, CIFS and so on.

Ok, so maybe i understand his posting wrong. My tool just gives a better protection when your where working and let somebody use your equipment.
Because of eSata and other devices. Not shure didn't test it. It's just aregistry key which will disable ext. storage devices. I have to test it against eSata and others.

You can try some or all of these steps. I have been using the last one on the list on my system
1. If the files are on an internal drive in your system, create a user account with user rights only. Disable the removable storage service in Windows. You won’t be able to connect an external drive, to copy or read files - best option.
2. I think this would work, but have not tried it: You can disable the plug&play service. You can still plug an external drive that was previously seen by the system, but nothing new can be added. Any USB devices will need to connected to the same port as before - sound cards, controllers, drives. If your system decides to find new hardware, your device may not show up.
3. External and/or with solutions above: You can encrypt the hard drive using truecrypt. I believe you can encrypt the drive and save the password so it only reads on your system, but not on another. -I type my password in every time.
thanks,
David
