So i was hired to do a gig at a club this weekend, the owner is someone ive known for a very long time.
Half way through the owner asked me if it was cool with me if some other dj used my gear (numark mixdeck)
As the guy is opening up his crate of cds i notice he is sweating and its running down the side of his head.
i told him to get his own headphones (i dont want his sweat on headphones).
This guy had a fit like a little girl!! WTF!
So the questions is this, what is your policy with regards to situations where other djs need to use your gear
at gigs?

Hahaaa!!
Bring your own, Headphones (because you sweat and thats just nasty, I aint tryin to feel that on my head, NASTY!!!),
Needles (they aint cheap, we all dont weigh are needles the same, we all dont use the same needles),
possibly your own Mixer (Crossfaders aint cheap, you might not like how mine feels and use that as an excuse for spinning a shitty set),
Laptop (Mine might not be up to your specs and you might use that as a an excuse for spinning a crappy set),
Records (mine might be old and just too burnt out for your liking).................
then I just might not want you touchin my stuff, lmao, but I'm foreal back up foo!!
Ive had the same problems. But really what DJ doesnt have his headphones with him?? Where they do that at..............I always bring my needles and headphones unless I know who it is but even then always my headphones even if I have to ran to the truck and get em 5 blocks away.
Just my 2 cents

my personal stuff? the "not just no, but HELL NO!" ruling applies.
but, guest dj's? we've had 2. one lasted an hour, the other lasted 2 whole nights. before they said "enough"
Posté Sun 14 Nov 10 @ 9:49 pm
if it is the clubs property, i have no problem but if it is your personal sh*t ....hell no and you have the right to say no. i have guest dj's "visit" and my rule is you use YOUR laptop and your controller. I have and extra channel on the club mixer just for that occasion. my remixes and edits lend to my creativity. not rude just facts...come ready. i have a lady dj that comes in every now and then with her serato and ns7. im on one side of the booth and she is on the other.

Even if a DJ is just using the club's own kit, surely to god they'd bring their own headphones and mic? I wouldn't want the windshield of my SM58 full of somebody else's spit...

it happen to me b4 he was an old skul dj in town use to play house and trance with the super star attitude i use my loptop and numark virtual vinyl with the djm600 and cdj400 from the club. ask me that my boss allow him to spin few track we are playing rnb hip hop and just a bit of dutch. i give him the decks then i unplug my headphone he ask me if he can use it i said ok but pls take care cos Sony are so easy to snap off . i go out of the both to get a drink after v3 songs i go back guest what my head phone just snap out ang he told me dnt buy sony get hdj2000 fuck men is it my fault that the head phone snap. and still act like the super star while he chase away all the ppl on the dance floor.
since i start djing the 1st thing i buy is the headphone now if any body ask me can i use you head phone i rader said got back and play hire if you already buy your own head phone

Wouldn't be using my gear, had it before, you let them use your gear and even then they seem to have contempt. I think it's just gelousy.
Anyway I would be hitting the owner for a fee and would be monitoring the gear as he DJ'd and if he was a complete amature then I'd pull him off, done it before.
Headphones
2 x mic leads, 1 xlr - xlr, 1 jack - xlr
Mic
Laptop or CD's
Preferably an all in one midi controller as back up just in case.
Without the above you just dealing with a knob head.

Im not too picky with the decks, but the headphones is a hygiene concern (if i get some sort of
infection i would at least like to have had a good time lmfao).
the reality of things was this, he got ticked off because i didnt let him use the headphones. he
said to me, you obviously dont play much otherwise you would know how this works, to which
i replied, i have my shit here you dont, you are welcome to dj without headphones if you like.
he came back shortly after with some walkman earphones and completely cleared the floor,
everyone went to the other floor but everyone came back when he went to the other floor
to screw around.

I'm the same with radio mics. I'm the only one that uses my beta 58, the others get the standbye sm58

I often get guest DJ's playing at the venues I play at...but they are told...no headphones...no play! Oh and if they break it, they buy it. My gig..my rules...simple!
Saying that I did have a very, very well known DJ/Producer turn up one night...and for him, I did break my rule, but he used my spare cans...trust me I really, really, really couldn't say no to him :) :) :) and he was possibly the nicest, most considerate person I've ever met - the only fear I had was how the hell to follow his set!...all was god and it was a truely memorable gig.

I've been lucky no one has asked me if they can use my equipment and if they did I would tell them...NO Way!

Us mobile guys have to deal with this too. How about when a guest at a party who happens to be a DJ (or even not) has the gusto to ask you if he can do a set on your equipment at a wedding?
Answer: Go sh*t in a hat. But if it was some special guest or family member, then you would have to handle this more delicately in saying no.

I left some of my gear at a house party a couple of months ago as I had to go to work in the club. It was a "freebie" for someone I work with during the day.
My NC20 Netbook was filled with sticky alcohol and the keyboard was knackered. My Peavey CS-1000x amp was left out in the rain, thankfully it was enclosed in a 9U case and was OK, and rather than unplugging the connectors from the back of the speakers one of them was ripped completely out.
Needless to say no-one will be borrowing my gear EVER again!
That is very funny .... must remember that for my boss tomorrow!

I dont even let the cats in my soundsytem use my sound equipment without me anymore...one cat has 2-3 years more into it then me...and he still cant hear his own mix..and after 5-6 cabinets being blown I just say no.....especially headfones and needles...
