So I have been thinking of getting a turntable for (scratching) but I also want to pick up a active subwoofer or even a flight case for the controller So I wanted your input on what do you think that is more important at this time. my budget is not very much to be honest its about 300. I am a still learning on a lot of things and don't know if i'm jumping the gun and should wait till I get a little more experience and then move forward. My set up right now is the Hercules RMX with a Mac book the odyssey dj flip out table with 2 led ADJ aggressors, a ADJ led duel gem pulse with a t-bar stand and I have the powered 15" 400w mackie thumps for my speakers with stands. I haven't had a gig since I started up, so I don't know if i should invest anymore money until I start to making a little money to cover what I have spent.

thanks

If your gonna spend the money at this stage I would go for the sub. That way when you do get a gig and it happens to be a larger packed venue your sound is strong enough.

Any purchase I make I ask my self two questions.....will this add value to the service I provide for my clients and, will this help me get more or better paying gigs?

Happy New Year!

Sole you in auckland?

Man you sound like you have more equipment than most people I know who dj lol. Don't bother buying a sub, you can always rent one when you need it for larger gigs in larger rooms and thats when you charge more to cover the hireage fee. Most gigs you can get away with using just the pair of thumps that you have.

I would say you need some real hardware to start dj'n with. I don't think the Hercules RMX is going to cut it. If your laptop dies, the hercules RMX becomes a large paperweight because you can't even continue playing with a Ipod as a backup.
I am sure you can sell your RMX unit for $400 at least. My bro had one and sold his on trademe for $650 a couple months back. You seem to outgrow it pretty fast because you can't scratch etc. I would say with the money you get your rmx for plus the extra you going to spend buy something like the vms4, mc6000, mpx-10 or something along those lines.

BTW try making a case for yourself and buying a carpet to make it look good. You can buy all the hardware to do it DIY.

Also if you need to start doing gigs try subcontracting for a dj company. Its good for experience. They advertise for dj's all the time. Your equipment is already better than theirs, they use the cheapest shit ever.

Good Luck man...

Hi, my advice would be a little bit different to be honest. I would keep the RMX, you haven't used it for a paid gig yet, so there's no way it's paid for itself. I don't have one, but I've heard they're great bits of kit and lots of people use them. It's a good point though about backup though, do you have a plan if your computer crashes? If not, then maybe that money would be best spent on an ipod or a cheap netbook and a cheap 'real' mixer so that you can carry on DJ'ing if there's any computer problems.

The real question here I reckon is are you DJ'ing for fun, or do you want to make money out of it? If it's just for fun and you're gonna do a few parties for friends along the way, then go mad and buy a turntable so you can learn to scratch. If you're trying to start a business, then I'd suggest buying a second hand mixer off ebay, so that you can run a backup. After a few paid gigs you could buy a sub-woofer or think about a more fancy controller.

And don't forget, there's always the option of not buying anything just yet! You could wait 'till after you've done a few gigs when you can work out what's really needed.

thanks for the advice guys....

I forgot to mention that I have thought about that too if the computer cashes so I have a back up mac also just in case that happens and a back up external hard drive I kinda of set them both up the same so if the problem happens I'm not digging thru files to get things back up and running all i do is start it up and back to the party. I'm in it to make some money but not looking to go pro I look at it as just a source of extra cash. I think that I will eventually get a business license just for the tax write off.

happy new year.

KINDLY SUGGEST ME TURNTABLES

Hey, I just picked up the American Audio VMS4 and realized that the mixer (or midi controller) wont really do my job for scratching.
I was planning on picking up turntables. Though not too expensive.
Also i was wondering whether I'd have to end up buying vinyl cd's too because I live in India and its not like they're available that easy. I'd probably have to order em online. I was also wondering whether there are any turntables out there that'll connect up to my laptop or mixer (via usb) and convert my mp3's into vinyl so i wouldnt have to buy the vinyl discs. would i be able to get the same scratch quality? I have alot of questions as i'm new to this. please help me out.
Oh and Shipping will also end up costing me a bomb so not too high a budget for TT's.
Thanks
