Vista Home does support more than 3.25GB of memory - providing you are running a 64-bit version. This is true for Windows XP and 7 also. Changing your drivers will not help with the problem and is not recommended if your system is performing well already. The issue is as cstoll described. I have made a diagram which I hope helps (the numbers are for demonstration purposes):

Edit: On looking at this problem a second time, perhaps drivers are an issue here. Virtual DJ is only seeing 2 GB of memory. I wonder why that is?

thank you for the info.... last night i did a fresh instal.. now look at the results.. shows 4gb. vdj is still only seeing 2047

The report of 2GB being available is correct, Scott kindly provided me with a link from Microsoft's site which confirms the memory limits of 32-bit applications as being 2GB (so my previous comment can be ignored - the diagram is still an accurate visualization). Could you provide a screenshot of the processes your computer is running by using task manager and sorted in descending memory order? It appears that some optimization may be required.

ok,, but vista is seeing all 4gb of ram now just as it did in the past,, VDJ isnt using it..

The computer understands that it has 4GB of memory installed, however, it can only access around 3GB of it. This is due to a 32-bit operating system being installed. A 32-bit processor (and operating system) can see a maximum of 4GB memory, but this is across all devices. Your graphics card has 1GB of memory (and various instruments such as wireless and bluetooth modules will require some too) reducing the total usable RAM in your system to less than 3GB.
I made a mistake here. Scott correctly informed me that a 32-bit process running on Windows can only be allocated 2GB of memory, the Microsoft article can be found here if you wish to read more. To provide a quick summary of the problem: you have 4GB of RAM installed but most likely the system can only utilize less than 3GB of it. Any single program can only see a maximum of 2GB.
It appears that your memory utilization is far higher on the newly installed operating system than your previous one. This is why it's important to compare how many tasks you're running compared to the working installation. It's unlikely to be a driver issue although not impossible.
To see how much RAM your system really has available to it you can view the performance Tab in Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Escape). There is a Physical Memory section in the lower left corner. My 32-bit system shows 3455MB total (due to a 256MB graphics adapter and other devices taking away from the 4GB total). I estimate yours will be less than this. If this proves to be correct, installing a 64-bit version of Windows would add over 1GB of available memory to your system and fix the problem. If this isn't an option (I'm not sure that Vista licenses work on both 32-bit and 64-bit) then you'll have to compare running tasks in the working installation compared to the one where you are having the issue.

hey thanks guy.. but looks like Discobrian wins the prize. i rolled back the video driver to 10.2 and bingo... I dont claim to understand much about computers but i'm trying.. but thank you all for your help.. its what makes this please and software great
So roll back the ATI drivers work.. why.. well lets blame Bill Gates I guess.. : b
So why rolling back the drivers make VDJ and Vista home work and see 4gb?
maybe there was a windows update that inadvertently helps the issue that it shouldnt.. but would really like to update the ATI vid drivers to date..
Again thank you all and as usual, Discobrian24,, you are the man.. I will post back after my next gig to update.. If its going to revert back to not working,, Damn pc will at a gig. lol

All I know is it may not have had anything to do with it, but the newer ATI drivers were leaking memory. I know I would start out the nite and be ok then it would go to hell.

From a topic that was goin on in another forum you can safely use 10.11.

thanks again man.. first the video freezing so long ago to this.. there really should be a thread for things to watch out for instead of relying on endless searching of topics that dont end up having an answer.. on here there has to be an easier way,, but thanks,, if you see any improvements please give me a ring

when i get my laptop back from HP, gonna have to try that and see if it gets rid of the memory leak problem.
thanx

When I load a file in eigther deck. I get the following message
Decompressing this file in memory would require 58mb of contiguous memory. Your system has only a total of 227mb available free segments (out of the 2047mb), and they are too fragmented to hold a contiguous buffer.
Therefore the song will be loaded on the fly from the drive (and the full waveform preview will not be available. )
Happens with mp3s. And vids. Help please.
Working a gig
is very bad that many people things they are technician, the problems is not virtual dj, the problem are the new controllerand drivers of your video card, uninstall the drivers version you have installed and install an older version and you will see in task manager virtual dj never will take all the ram memory, we have been studyng this problem and fund several fixes, but the only that works was deletegin new drivers and installind an older drivers version before 2010, all work fine, the probblem is that the new drivers take de ram phisycal memory as videocard memory omiting the video card internal memory so the virtual dj will take directly the memory inside it.

Today i added another 6 GB ram and it solved the problem. Seems like a 64 bit system uses a lot more memory.
Posté Tue 02 Aug 11 @ 10:40 pm
I have tweaked the machine based on both this forum and black Vipor, uped the ram to 9 gb and just now while running several videos in the waitlist and one in the second deck in a 32 beat loop just got the same or message:
"Decompressing this file in memory would require 63Mb of
contiguous memory.
Your system has only a total of 624 Mb available free segments
(out of the 4095Mb), and they are too fragmented to hold a
contiguous buffer"
The Performance monitors show that 4353 Mb is in use
26 Mb is Modified
4436 Mb is in Standby
400 Mb free
it also says 4835 Mb is Available
4461 Mb is Cached
9214 Total
9216 installed
I really am at wits end! I guess the only thing left to do is replace the ATI Diamond Radeon 4650 video card with a Nvideo card.
Any other suggestions?

New laptop, windows 7 4GB of ram and I get the fallowing error message, even if I have all files off the laptop!
Any help please?

Where can you download the older drivers for the AMD/ATI Video Card?
