Are you saying that your first gig is to 1000 people? if so, can you give details of the venue and date please.

lol, no, i wish, the room holds 400 and we're expecting about half of that... 1000 really would be a baptism of fire wouldn't it! its a fairly small town and by then the weather will be better (hopefully) so we're re-launching thursday nights. although we do hit 700 on a friday and 1000+ on a saturday night, obviously with much more experienced dj's than myself, im a manager there but looking to move away from it and persue DJing instead.

Please don't take offense to this but, as a manager would you not be aware of the current format, DJ sets, warm-up sets, when it get's busy, what the clientele listen to, etc? I would think that a manager would have a firm grasp on the mode of operation unless you manage the kitchen or some other part of the venue that doesn't see the nightly actions of the main club.

This thread may help answer some of your questions: http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/145418/General_Discussion/first_gig_this_friday.html

Best of luck.

In my experience of the UK pub & club business, a Manager is someone young and inexperienced the venue can pay peanuts to who will work all hours but not have a clue how the business is ran. (not saying that applies to you Brian :)

In one venue I worked at, an 18 year old guy started as a glass collector straight out of school with no experience at all, and 4 months later he was a venue manager. Basically the reason for it was that they could give him a salary and a Managers title but get him to work stupid hours without paying overtime on the hourly bar workers rate.

Sorry if this sounds a bit negative but there are soooo many places in my town where the "Manager" is 18 or 19 years old and knows nothing about the business whatsoever!

P.S. Good luck with your first gig Brian

All these jobs such as glass collector, cleaner, bar manager etc are mainly student jobs, hence people come and go so if you've been there for a year then your automatically made manager.

Does seem strange that your DJing Brian with no experience, a lot of experienced DJ's out of work at the moment.

You didn't mention the town and venue, probably best to keep it a secret.

Good Luck

My first advice would be to be serious enough about your craft to invest in a license for the tools you are using. My second advice is, don't use pirated music. I don't know if you are or not, but not buying the VDJ license leads me to believe that you are not paying for other things. Be serious enough about your craft to be good at what you are doing, but not so serious that it takes the fun out of it. If you're not having fun, no one else will.

erm... yeah thanks for the advice.

to fill in a few gaps:

the venue is Rockafellas & Bar chanel in corby, northamptonshire. where im deputy manager,
previous to this i have worked as management at different levels in zanzibar leicester, shout huddersfield, mccluskys kingston, the slug & lettuce (just a bar) in wimbledon and life in corby,

i dont mean any of this to sound as if im snapping back at anyone, but feel that some comments should really have questions asked first.

i am aware of music and the industry (its all i have ever done) however as im sure you will be aware if you have ever managed (not just been there for a year) a club or late licence bar, the length of sets and warm ups, when to drop the big ones etc.. is one of just the many things on your mind when you have a club full of paying customers fighting, bottling each other, people swamping you trying to ponse free drinks off you, tills crashing, staff not turning up.

all of my music is legal, purchased from various sources, be it beat port, cd pool, itunes, mastermix digital to name a few, i shop around to find the best mixes, i welcome any prs inspection at any time. Further to this i also have a pair of martin audio aq6 and bose panarays at home, i am serious about it and am not afraid of spending money in the right places.

i appreciate that there are a lot of very good and very experienced djs out there at the moment, christ i get calls of them every week, but the reason i am doing it and not someone else is 1, i would like the experience and the opportunity to get better, (everyone is inexperienced at some point) and 2, clubs are having a hard time at the moment, im doing it for my salary and no extra cost therefore helping the bottom line of the club and myself at the same time.

as for being an unlicenced user, i / we (the club) do have a full registered version of vdj 7, purchased through this site via electronic download, was used on the the club's own laptop which died so my own, (with permission from the club owner) the only issue is that one of the previous managers registered it on here himself, and i dont know if the same product key (which i have at home) can be registered to my account. if this is possible can someone please let me know and by tomorrow below my name will no longer say unlicenced user.

Im sorry if that seemed like a rant, all comments are welcome, all i want is to still be in the environment that i love and always have, just getting a bit bored of being the one thats not having as much fun.

thanks,

brian,

(and if someone could get back to me about the licence it would be brilliant)

Brian...I still remember my first club gig...I was nervous as hell (was a few years ago now)...but one thing I do remember is some sage words a fellow DJ said to me...

"Have fun and enjoy yourself...the crowd will respond to a DJ that is having fun...oh and listen to the girls requests, guys always ask for something obscure to try and impress you...lol"

Oh and look at the crowd and smile...nothing worse than a moody DJ with an ego...lol

You'll be fine and I'm sure we'll see posts after the gig saying what a fantastic time you and the patrons had.

Brian, it would be best if you made a support ticket and raised the points you made on the registration of the software, give them as much information as you can ie when purchased, the company name and address, who was manager at the time, also try to find out if it was purchased on a company card or the managers own personnal one.

One point that needs to be raised though, usually licenses or normally not transferable, goodluck on the license aspect and hey, you know why you want to move over to the DJ side so have a ball on the night...

cheers for that simon, thats pretty much what ive been told by lots of people, "dont panic if you screw up"... "just laugh it off and get on with it" and i know what you mean about a moody dj. the dj's attitude rubs off on the crowd, so although im absolutely peeing my pants about it ill get on with it, smile and have a laugh. im not going to try anything outrageous just keep the crowd happy (well try to!)

@ tayla, cheers for that, i have a meeting with the owner tomorrow so ill bring it up and find out the info needed before i contact support. If its not possible ill carry on as i am now till ive got the pennies to buy my own copy, (which is going to have to happen anyway) so please guys, dont slate me for having no licence, im not a pikey! lol.

thanks again.

I might be a little confused here, but if you went to the management and told them you could save them some money by just letting you DJ; err, play music, then nicely done.

What you have done is stolen a gig from someone who most likely has paid their dues to get to the club scene. How about this: Take the time to work off nights. Perhaps you could roadie for another DJ. That would earn you a lot more respect around here than saying to a club owner,

"Hey, I can do the same thing and I'll do it for what you already pay me!"

Just make sure you remember this situation when some kid shows up a year or two from now and does the same thing.

WOW, this is a rough crowd in here. I thought I was evil. Wait, I am evil, just not at the moment. Brian, when I am nervous about performing, I usually smoke crack or meth, to take the edge off. This way the paranoia counteracts the nervousness. On a more serious note, take a look at the crowd, and make adjustments. I like to gradually move into the pumping stuff. My bpms are increasing as the time goes on. You can tell when the girls need to be fed. I do not play the hot stuff early, and not all at the same time. Resist you must. I do not like to play stuff twice. I want the last hour and a half to be kicking. Good luck

no license .....

someone either didn't get a job

or someone lost a job .......
