Sujet: How to visualy match patterns

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

Hey guys,

Question, perhaps its a feature that I dont know of, perhaps its a wish, perhaps there is a workaround.

When mixing records that you dont know that well you very much rely on both your ear, logic and the graphical representation of the wave to determine where the breaks and the revivals are, so you can mix the record 'in pattern', meaning record A and record B are both peaking at the same time to use the build up of the one record to fully switch over to the other.

In general you can say a pattern consists of 16 bars, but sometimes you have these sneaky basterd producers that will make your life difficult by adding or removing hence shifting the pattern.

Another problem is that its not allways possible using the graphical wave representation to estimate where to kick in if I want my records to fall on eachother at a certain point because the length of the display is influenced by the duration. Comparing a long record with a shorter one doesnt really work..

Is there any way I can compare the two wave forms in 1:1 ratio, overlay them so to speak, to determine exactly the place where I want to kick in?? Or is there any workaround? For example let the record start so two preset cuepoints meet?

Thx in advance

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i dont see how vdj can change that i mean i see no problem with how the wave displays plus you should consider using headphones if your not using them. if you use headphones it wont matter weather the waves display or not cause you can cue up exactly at the break chorus intro outro of a song or any point you want in song long as you know were to find the break and such honestly you dont need waves display to mix/dj tho it does help a little bit

Not sure what version of VDJ you are using.
But, when I upgraded to Pro and started getting new skins it made a big difference in how I view wave forms. I can press a button on that says rhythm, and it splits up the wave forms differently. It can overlap them, place one above the other, or place each one above their respective decks.
This is really helpful for me to judge the different wave forms and place them accordingly.

Hope that helps!

Thx for your response,

Might not have been totally clear in what I want so lets give an example, listen to the first two tracks on http://www.mixcloud.com/jboerlage/sundaynightmixpart11/

On 1:29 the second track kicks in right after the build up of track one. The tracks than run nicely together in pattern, as you can hear at for example on 1:58 the patterns are still in perfect sync. But, on 2:28 you can hear one of the songs adds or misses a bar, causing them to go off sync (pattern wise). If I could have seen this comming by for example a wave view display that overlays the full waves relative to their positions than I could have looped one bar extra to keep the sync. No headphone would have helped me with this (well I could have counted it out but by than missed my chances :P)

And yes I use Virtual DJ Pro and I've tried several skins, but nowhere found such an overloop. Are there skins that show you this?

Overloop ey? If that means loop the last few bars try this

deck # loop ? deck # loop_exit : deck # goto -4 & deck # loop 4 & beatlock while_pressed & deck 1 sync while_pressed

it will jump back 4 beats and loop 4 beats locked to the beat but if you are already in a loop it will exit the loop, You need to change the deck # for the deck you want to effect. you can of course change the goto and the loop number for anything you like, just make sure they are the same, and if you want you can stop it from beatlocking, but it seems cleaner this way.

in relation to your other question, i don't know how you would be able to tell the positions of the tracks down to 1 bar just from looking at it, The best advice I can give is just practice, you should never play songs you don't know for a crowd, that's when you get caught out.

all in all tho i like the mix! loving the california dreaming remix thats one i havent heard!

Thx brianjohnstone! All in all it was a fun mix indeed. Just one stupid error where the key didnt match going to 'We want more', that will teach me not to trust the detected key until the song is fully loaded :P
