Hey guys. I'm new to DJ'ing for crowds. I used to be a radio dj, but this is a whole new dimension, and I'm excited to learn everything about it, and I'm pretty sure I'll find most of mu answers on these forums. Awesome.
I have one question. I have a premium subscription to Virtual DJ, but I'm wondering how the licensing for the netsearch cache works. Technically it's a copy of the song on my hard drive. As I'm in Canada, I would need an AVLA licence, right? Or is it because I'm "renting" the music, I don't need this licence?
Just want to make sure I'm doing this all legal, because I noticed that if I just follow some of the rules bluntly, I'm overpaying for the services, and it's not even necessary to have.
Any advice would help. Thanks!

In Canada, There are only three ways to legally use music for commercial purposes AND use a computer. (All DJs who get paid to DJ are commercial DJ's).
1.) Own the original store bought CD and pay for an AVLA license (this allows you to copy the music onto your computer, and make one backup)
or
2.) Lease the digital music source from an AVLA approved source.. (PromoOnly, ERG, Xtendamix, & Zipdj are the only sources available right now for digital DJ's, in my opinion Xtendamix is the best)
or
3.) contact every single label and get written permission to use their music for commercial purposes..
Note:
* Itunes TOS says their music can not be used for commerical purposes.. but technically your not breaking the copywrite law.. So legally not good but since the artist IS being paid its +1 for ethics.
* the AVLA license is ONLY good for copying store bought CD's (IE: HMV, Amazon, etc etc..) you are not given the right to copy the cd's from ERG or PromoOnly or any 'leased music source' etc..
The netsearch via Grooveshark & Youtube is a very GREY area when it comes to the Canadian Copywrite law.. both services are 'streaming' services so they dont fall under the normal "Copywrite laws"
lets put it this way.. Their is NO licensing available to make using these services for commercial use 100% legal in Canada.. On the other hand (like itunes, or playing a streaming yourtube video off the internet) your not personally breaking the copywrite law..
Advice?
What ever you do.. dont "lend", "sell" , or make multiple copies of your music (no matter where you get it from).. As long as you dont go around trying to be a music distributer/seller then the labels will leave you alone..
P.S.
Many DJ's will get an AVLA license anyways (no matter their situation) for two reasons.
1.) if you ever do get inspected, once the inspector see's a license he will go on to 'the next guy'
2.) no digital service carries all the older back catalog of music, so most DJ's end up ripping song from a CD anyways.

Canada is tough .....
i asked Marcel what would happen if i played illegal music in Canada.....
He said a moose would break into my garage and chew the tires off my car .....

So, in other words, if you at least try to do it the legal way, you're probably good..
Thanks Hippydog.
@chucknorris Luckily, I don't own a garage ;)

I have managed to get skype connected to VDJ so I can now broadcsat voice chat on a radio server. I did this by purchasing a Behringer XENYX 302 USB Mixer. It only cost me £39. You simpy run a small jack to phono input on line input on the Mixer from the pcs speaker output and plug in the usb. Set all the pcs audio settings to the mixer.

In a nutshell, the RCMP Officer who investigated my company told me a few things: FIRST and FOREMEST: The conclusion of their investigation was that the multiple complaints that they had against me were the result of jealous competition! (Ya I know who! Love ya Hamilton! -Why not try practicing your beats rather than back stabbing?) The officer then explained that while I was technically breaking copywright law, it was the result of the law not catching up with current technology: I was maintaining the spirit of the law, just not the rule of it. He said that if I was copying music and DID NOT have AVLA license, then I may get a letter to comply. I would then have 30 days to destroy the illegal HDs or purchase AVLA licenses (this was not his problem). If I was selling HDs full of music or copying for multiple units (>5), it would be a different story. -->I think that the nice federal police officer was pissed that DJ POLITICAL cow manure had wasted the time and resources of his department.
My pink-a$$ advice is do what you will, but purchase an AVLA license. The 'inspector' would have never even showed up if I payed my pimp fee... PS: I threw the inspector off of my show because he showed up at my gig looking like a meth head "SHOW ME YOUR lovely lavender BADGE RIGHT NOW OR I WILL HAVE YOU REMOVED! LEAVE!" - seriouusly. I was embarassed in front of my client and I know the difference between criminal and civil matters.
Point: If I had been aproached professionally, I would have responded differently. I am not scared to stand up!
