I have this one question thats been buggin me for a while since I started dj at my school. Is it a good idea to play the most popular songs at the beginning of an event?

Only if the gig is One hour long.....

i dj mostly frat parties and other college events sprinkle the old top 40 in at the beginning and all the new and classics at the end. personally i like to do a section near the end with songs everyone knows all the words to

Yeah, "runs.." has got the right idea...

All those most popular new songs are your "floor fillers" so do some "so new nobody knows them yet" songs right at the start (or slightly older top 40, or the more obscure ones that are upbeat but not massive hits), then, when you can see that everybody's arrived and had a chat, and they're all nodding their heads and tapping there feet to that other stuff your playing...

Then it's time to switch it up a gear, turn up the volume a bit, set the lights to sound active, set your phasers to stun, and then roll out the big new popular hits, starting with the really popular but slower ones and building up to the faster ones to gain excitement.

Once you've got them on the floor and into your groove with all that new popular stuff then it's time to put on the classics that everybody knows all the words to or just the classics that you know will get a reaction!

Hope that helps.

Here is a playlist from a prom I did. I came out with both barrels blazing. There is enough music out right now to be able to play A LOT of hot music most of the night. I had the majority of the kids dancing most of the night. All selections are remixed and clean for play at a school sponsored event.

For school dances that last usually 2-3 hours and todays short attention span of students I come out blazin with currents right up front to set the mood (otherwise in the first 10-15 minutes they decide you are wacked and playing nothing but oldies all night). After about a hour and you have their confidence you can play pretty much anything (within reason) new or old as long as it's a floor filla you can't go wrong.
