Sujet: Newbie, sound card recomendation, how to attach DJM, CDJs.

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

Hello all,
I downloaded and installed Virtual DJ yesterday and had a mix out in mins, I love it! After laboring for weeks and years beat matching, I have decided the modern era is upon me and I should start using software!

My equipment:
1.DJM 600
2.CDJ 400
3. Technics sl1200.
4. Desktop Dell XPS 650i with Win XP.

Now onto my questions:
I did the mix blind, as in I couldn't hear either deck via headphones, ie not master.
1. How do I listen to the deck 2 on headphones when deck 1 is playing, can I also listen to the master, ie both decks playing?

I found this info:
How do I listen to or monitor the next upcoming song in my headphones
To be able to pre-listen to music using headphones, you will either need two sound cards or a sound card with multiple outputs, such as a 5.1 surround sound card or a dedicated DJ sound card.

Most laptops only have a single sound output, but you can add a USB 'stick' sound card to provide you with the additional output that you need. Alternatively, you can use a single sound card and the mono split option in VirtualDJ's sound setup, however this will only give you MONO sound. Once you have suitable sound card(s), you will then need to go into VirtualDJ CONFIG -> Sound Settings and choose Outputs: Headphones and select the appropriate sound card(s). To choose which deck to pre-listen to, press the TAB key. Use the crossfader and/or volume sliders to control which deck is output live over the master outputs.

So question 2: What sound card would you recommend? The end goal is to DJ in clubs, so a portable one would be better? and I assume eventually move to a Laptop?

Question 3: I would like to use the mixer/cdj + technics, though eventually I plan to have mixer + 2 CDJs, with the virtual DJ software, how do I do this?
Is there a simple guide, I am getting a little overwhelmed!

Thank you for your help.

first of all you need the pro version to use timecodes.

second, to connect your hardware, assuming you have a pair of 1200's and a pair of 400's than you need a 8in/8out soundcard such as

for your questions

1: http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/108503/General_Discussion/Headphone_Setup_And_Usage_Guide_____.html

2: if your only gonna use 2 hardware inputs, go for the maya 44 usb or similar.

3: maya 44 to usb, deck one to maya 44 inputs 1+2, deck 2 into inputs 3-4, then maya 44 output 1+2 to mixer channel 1, maya 44 outputs 3-4 to mixer channel 2, mixer to amp. put a timecode cd in each deck, hey presto.

dont forget to install the soundcard software and drivers and do sound tests and tweaks. before gigging

btw, you need to also in vdj, config > sound setup and make sure you have these options

inputs = timecodes
outputs = external mixeer
soundcard = asio driver.

there you go. theres a lot of fine detail stuff also, but those are the basics.

Thanks for taking the time to explain and give some info/recommendations, I will definitely look into it.

Looking around NI Audio 4 Dj looks perfect, a little more expensive, yet now it seems discontinued?
Guess its audio 6 DJ or 2, but two you couldnt add your CDJs in no?

Do club DJs mainly use traktor now, Ableton live? Virtual DJ?

Thanks

Actually, you already own all the necessary components for a fully working setup. Your CDJ-400 can be used as both sound cards and controllers...although you need to have the Pro-version in order to do that. You'll need a new sound card only if you want to use time code vinyl as well.

As for the question what club DJs are using...well, guess what answer you're going to get on this forum? ;)

Wow, yes the cdj-400 can usb into the pc, but how would one control that and the mixer (via virtual dj on the pc)?

The turntable is a bit of a red herring, thats in the set up as I cannot currently afford a second cdj, and also to record old records to mp3s.

You just plug the cdj's into the mixer as normal, the signal from vdj is then fed through the cdj instead of the cd audio, and you use the midi capabilities of the cdj 400's to control the transport and functions of vdj.
