Hi new here so if I've placed this in the wrong could one of the moderaters place it in the right place. Now on with my question! I'm a beginner DJ who is getting really into the DJ experience. What I need to know is just a few pointers in terms of hardware. I have a Sony Vaio Laptop VGN-NR model I use which has 2GB RAM and a 250GB HDD. I have an external HDD which is 1TB. Is this okay for DJing on? Also I could do with some help choosing a MIDI controller, I'll be investing in VDJ soon and so need one that will work with it. I dont have a lot to spend £100-£120 on it so I need something to just get me started. I've got speakers, so no need for them. Thanks for any help given

yes your laptop is fine for djaying on, a midi controller on your budget i would recommend the hercules mp3e2. its a great little unit with plenty of features. plus it comes with VDJ limited edition. so you would be ready to start straight away.

Your computer is fine and it will work perfect. About the midi controller...I would say that it would better if you could get at least a little bit more money, because like Blulite said you can get the MP3e2...but for only a little more you can get something more professional and better.
Just search a lot on the internet about whats the best you can get with your budget!

What OS are you running on the Vaio? XP, Vista, Win7? If Vista or Win7 its highly recommended to have a minimum of 4GB of Ram.
What CPU is in this said PC?
The CPU plays a vital role in MultiMedia so its good to make sure you have one that is sufficient for not just running it, but Running it very well without problems or overheating.
That being said I would recommend saving a bit more and getting a Hercules RMX. ITs one of the best available, tremendous soundcard, and works flawless with VDJ.

those vaios come usually with vista.
and one of these processors
Intel Core 2 Duo T5250, Intel Core 2 Duo T5450, Intel Core 2 Duo T5500, Intel Core 2 Duo T5750, Intel Core 2 Duo T8100, Intel Pentium Dual Core T2330, Intel Pentium Dual Core T2370, Intel Pentium Dual Core T2390
from the reading ive done, apparently they're a little sluggish and could do with having more ram to run vista to a quality standard. not really able to comment on that though seeing as my laptops are HP, Dell, Toshiba, Acer and MSI.
although ready boost is available on vista so an instant ram increase can be added with an sd card.

My Vaio is on Win7 from factory, Core2 Duo T6600 2.2Ghz and 4GB Ram and runs VDJ tremendous. Vista is a resource hog and is the second worse version of Windows ever next to ME (Millennium Edition). With Vista OS alone 1 Gig is the minimum it takes to run the OS itself and is preferred to have 2GB to run it smoothly and Optimal. Win7 Uses much less resources and can run on 512 (on a clean install with no other third party apps running) but is recommended 1GB minimum and 2GB preferred.

yeah w7 is great for vdj, i run it on my netbook. i only wish id have though before i acted and upgraded my acer to w7 premium instead of my netbook. i do have another upgrade key, but i cant bloody read the thing as my label has worn :(
i think the model vaio mentioned was primarily shipped with Vista. the ones ive looked at all had it. could be wrong though.

pskeens is correct
on all counts ... also he points out that you should lead off by telling us what
the operating system is ......it matters
xp for instance would run better on just 2 gigs of ram than Vista .....
i usually recommend 4 gigs of ram (minimum) , which is common nowadays
if you're not doing video i imagine that will be good enough
to me though good enough ......isn't
highly recommend that you do this with a powerful , not a mediocre , system ......
i have 3 systems at the moment ... i always maintain 3 or 4
the back up system is Win 7 laptop it's the backup , because that's all it's good 4
knowing what i now know , i would not buy it again .....it was my first Win 7 system
having said that , it can run video and several plugins simultaneously.....to a non DJ it would be fine
the strip club system is a laptop with a good video card and 6 gigs of ram
the mobile system is a desktop, has a mediocre video card and 8 gigs of ram
the best , smoothest running system is the desktop

Hi sorry for a long delay in replying to the thread but the laptop in question is going under some repairs at the minute for a faulty moniter. So it could potentially mean I'll be shopping for a new laptop too but could really do without that extra cost, however any suggestions? To answer some of your questions its running Windows Vista 32bit, Intel Pentium Dual Core T2390 / 1.86 GHz ( Dual-Core ). I know this a mediocre processor but its been fine for me in the past and I usually use a third-party app which removes a lot of unnecasary processes and programmes and helps speed the laptop up a bit, also theres very little on there in terms of programmes etc. I was looking to upgrade Win 7 soon but may invest sooner if thats recommended? I could probably increase my budget for a midi a bit, I really like the look of the Numark Mixtrack Pro, do any of you use that or have done in the past? Also may sound like a silly question but my Vaio only has a single soundcard this means that I cant use speakers and headphones independantly, which is a pain, is it better to buy a USB soundcard and a midi without one, or a midi with an inbuilt soundcard?
