I see lots of posts in the web, and hear other DJs talking - and it's just amazing how many people don't know that (for example):
VDJ can be skinned. Loads of people saying stuff like "Oh I don't like the look of it"...
VDJ can run VST plugins. Loads of people saying "VDJ doesn't do......effect like Traktor" etc.
Even here on the forum, regular posts about VDJ not having a particular effect.
It doesn't help of course that there's no mention of using VSTs (amongst other things) in the VDJ manual.

oh god not this topic again LOL
I learned long ago not to care about what other people say, Specially not a sales rep, they are working for commission like another poster on here pointed out. But I also fault Atomix a little bit in this department, if they would do a much better job about getting out there to these DJ stores and holding in store events showing the capabilities of the software to the store's customers and sales rep there might be a fighting chance to change peoples opinions on the spot once they see an experienced user using it to its full potential.
Unfortunately many people don't have the patience or the technical skills to figure out how to trouble shoot the problems they may have, they just simply want to plug and play! Due to the fact that VDJ is so customizable (I LOVE THAT) there may be a few tweaks that a user may need to make before its running to their expectations but you only have about 1 minute to make a good first impression and if your spending those first few minuted messing around with the software and getting frustrated your not going to have a good 1st impression.
There will always be fan boys out there whose opinion are set in stone, so don't even bother....let them see it an action and I bet they may find it interesting.
About a year ago my Brother had his birthday bash, he hired one of our good friends to DJ (Serato) his party. He had to leave the party really quick to get a speaker cable that my brother failed to get. When I arrived at the party I noticed that people were starting to arrive and I noticed my brother was starting to panic because there was no music. Lucky for him I had my xponent and laptop in my car, I brought it out plugged into our friend's DJM-800, fired off the laptop and I played for a good 30 minutes before our friend returned with the speaker cable for the 2nd speaker. I played for an additional 30 minutes with my friend watching me do my thing, I didn't use the sync button because I rather use cue points and pitch bending to sync my tracks, I have nothing against the sync button and I wouldn't think twice about using it if I had to but some DJs are very touchy about sync button.....the following week him and a few other friends who were at the party asked me if I was using Traktor. I told them that I was using virtual DJ but that I do use traktor also, they mentioned how they didn't know virtual DJ could do all that and works so good. I told them if you take the time to learn the software they would be amazed at what other cool things the software can do. They never again tried to preach to me about Serato, prior to this they would always ask me why I didn't use Serato. I'm a very open minded person and I have given Serato many chances but I still don't like it, I guess I'm just a VDJ fan boy LOL.
Anyway, don't waste your time on the fan boys..........if you tried to preach Serato to this VDJ fan boy I would look at you like you were crazy.

Its the principle behind it, and thats all I'm saying about it.
I used to have a computer business and when I would go to Best Buy or Circuit City and walk around the computer section and hear sales people talk to people about computers I laughed. They tried to sell PC's to people and didn't know what they were talking about. I always would follow up behind those sales people and tell them the truth. I was not very well liked in Best Buy or those stores.
Back when I was out of high school in the early 90's I built car audio systems. Again going to the stores back then and listen to sales people try and sell something that they had no clue of. I remember the old Pioneer Super Tuner III (Remote CD player with removable faceplate) one time that a guy was wanting to buy one. The sales person said you really don't want to buy that they aren't a very reliable deck and CD's skip a lot. He wanted to sell an Alpine to this person. I quickly stepped in and told the truth that the Pioneer is one of the best decks on the market, I have one, I have installed several and they DO NOT SKIP and never had a problem with them.
The buyer looked at the sales guy like he was stupid and wondered why he was being told these things. I have a pet peeve on this subject, so when I hear people talk as they don't have a clue especially with Music equipment and Computers I fight back. Its who I am and it will always bother me.
I don't care if its Sam Ash, Guitar Center, or wherever If I hear people talking like their stupid I'm going to correct them. Opinions are opinions but facts are facts.

You go ahead and correct all the people you want. Me? I have a gig to go do. And thats the bottom line.
Posté Sat 16 Jul 11 @ 4:10 pm
People don't take the time to get their facts straight and do the research they need to do in order to make an informed decision. Others have one bad experience with a software (ex. System crash) while using it and blame the software without digging in and searching for the root cause.
Sales people will tell you what ever you want to hear or what they've formulated their opinions on. They usually don't possess all of the practical experience required in every product they sell either. Making the sales is usually all that is important to them.
The bottom line is, use what works for you! Don't listen to the haters (they're full of negative energy) and do your research, formulate your OWN opinion, and use whatever rocks the party! Take pride in the fact that you've done your homework and made the right choice without listening to bias opinions.
And no matter what choice you have made, make sure you please your audience.

It wasn't a jab at you ... :)
When ever someone brings up the topic (about every 9 or so months) of "What people don't know..." or "Why such the bad rap..." it just turns into a rant about all the 'wrong' things VirtualDJ has done to not make a better name for itself.
But think about it - for all the things people say we are not or do not do - WE ARE ... pushing the industry into making change.
- Look at a company like Serato that use to say they would never get into the controller market - where are they now?
- Who ever thought a company like Pioneer would ever produce something that was not just analog?
- Who ever thought that a company like Traktor would be forced into making their own controller product just to win over controller users because they couldn't work with manufactures.
- Who ever thought, with all the bad stigma (LOL); VirtualDJ would be even considered by the WMC to have VirtualDJ as an option voted on and actually WIN the best DJ Software product award?
... and there are a few others I could list ...
We have set the bar in many areas for everyone out there in so many ways ... and YES we have had our faults along the way. But everyone has and the facts are out there - just read their forums.
But it is up to US the VirtualDJ users to make that effort to change the minds or at least bring agreement to those that don't know or don't believe VirtualDJ is as good and/or better than the others. Without our voice as the VirtualDJ community of users - making that effort - people will not know and change the way they represent VirtualDJ.

EXACTLY!! This is the point! Stand up for what WE KNOW and BELIEVE IN, and don't just let people downgrade it not knowing the facts.

I have went 2 many shows with so called "pro" dj's who have regular club gigs & all that & when I pull out my laptop and pop open Virtual DJ, they ask, "Is that Virtual DJ" I tell them yes & I have had a few make some comments & I come back with....Can u use almost any controller that u want 2, or can u Mix Video's or Do Karaoke & most of them do not have a comeback for that....So then I tell them when your software can do all of that then I might start using it.....Cause not gonna lie I used 2 feel a little embarrassed about using VDJ until I learned of what all it CAN do compared 2 what other software CAN'T do, then I didn't feel so bad anymore...

One big thing that bothers the shit out of me with Virtual Dj is that the Free version looks damn near identical to the 300 dollar version. I agree that it should be called something else and have a bit of a more professional look.. I know yall will probly rip me for this, but I have made the switch since I was having stability problems with what i was using. Before I was using a Herculers RMX and Stanton T.60 turntables. I was having video freezing and glitch problems and raised a support ticket about it which didn't get answered for 3 months. So i decided to buy a ttm 57SL with Video SL and have been trouble free ever since, by the way I use Stanton STR8 150s now. I have no beef with anyone on these forums or atomix. I still use the software and my rmx for small gigs, just couldnt get it to stabilize with the videos is all..
P.S. I am using the same laptop now as I was using then with no upgrades.

Another thing that the free version is doing is making laptop only (bottom feeder djs) with home surround sound sytems that will do parties for 50 dollars with pirated music a growing fad. When I tell people my price the first thing out of their mouths is they can do it for this. Don't get me wrong I still get plenty of gigs because I do video gigs and regular gigs and club gigs, but I just want everyone to respect the craft and dont think what they are doing is okay and of equal to a real dj.

My .02 on the subject.
VDJ has always had a reputation of being used by bedroom DJ and mobile DJ. That may be due to the many pirated versions out there as well as the free version that can be downloaded here. Also I believe VDJ markets to the masses rather than your niche DJ. I mean does VDJ even sponsor any big name DJ/Producer? Has VDJ ever partnered with "industry standard" hardware?
I say that to say this. VDJ although a great software, will continue to be viewed as a software for the masses rather than a PRO software. Even Traktor, to a certain extent, has this rep. Serato Scratch Live has done a great job in marketing itself as a "PRO" dj software due to its marketing. Support big name DJ's and Producers. Partnering with hardware used at clubs and large venues.
I am a club DJ and use both Traktor and VDJ. And to be honest, when playing with other DJ's, having Serato SL will make my life easier. It is much easier to transition between DJ's and I do not really have to bring my own gear just a HD and cans. As it is now, I typically bring my coffin and laptop. Or my own laptop and soundcard(if playing on TT's). Makes switching DJ's really difficult. And adds to my and the other DJ's frustration. I am actually considering on switching to Serato just due to this fact. I have nothing against the software and the short time I have owned it, I have grown to like it for its ease of use and stability. But given my situation, where the club standard is Serato, I can't make 100+ DJ's in my area switch for my benefit.

someone wants to say they are more "pro" then me.. I will simply ask them to show me their paycheque.. I will then show them mine..

Either you know how to use your tools, or you don't..

me, no...(whistles)...
theres a lot of people here who were a crack user at one time. although i was, i constantly see the software splattered all over the internet, when i used cracked, it was really difficult to find on the internet. now its readily available. i just think there needs to be a bit more enforcement than there is at the moment.
there is always going to be someone who leaks the software onto the net but its a shame to see it so thickly spread around.

Who gives a toss what it's viewed as .... I use VDJ flawlessly in a club with a "professional" Denon MC6000 controller and who exactly knows the difference?
From a business point of view, Atomix partner with some low end crap controller manufacturers (as well as Denon et al) to bundle LE, but I bet the company makes far more money worldwide with that model than selling a niche product. If you were in charge of Atomix, would you rather sell 1000 copies of VDJ a week or 100 copies of a niche software at a similar price point?
Who cares about what people think when the money is rolling in. It's business.

Can be controlled to a point with server authentication or a hardware dongle but again it's not the company's preferred course of action.

Nor is it the most practical --
-- Ask an old PCDJ user what they had to go through if they had to re-install their software at a gig and didn't have an internet connection.
-- Ask a SSL user what happens if their sound card takes a dump at a gig.
-- Ask a Itch user what they can't do if the controller acts up and the software won't detect it or the controller dies at a gig.
You all can replace the products above with VirtualDJ in those scenarios and still perform your gig if you find yourself in similar situations.
Btw - I need to post this link to SSL as it is the first thread there in years where people talk about VDJ and don't bash the users about it (you might recognize a few names who are using BOTH depending on the situation) -- Its a tell tale sign that at least we are wearing the nay-sayers down. http://serato.com/forum/discussion/485421

It's just because you look for it more now. It's like buying a particular make/model car - you don't realize how many people have it or how many dealers carry it until you are driving one.
We have a very good handle on shutting down those illegal distributions. I would say that we are pretty successful in getting the links to be 'dead links' within 24-48 hrs of knowing about one. And we have successfully shut down dedicated sites trying to distribute and/or sell the crack version. So, I think we are doing a pretty good job these days in that area.
