The one I started with was $500. It's not about the price, is about what's in it.

Choose what DJ software you want to use and then make sure you read the software's minimal requirements and try to exceed them as much as you can with your $800.

My starter rig was:

Laptop (Acer) = $500
hercules rmx = $300
VDJ Pro = $150 (if you buy the Hercules first they give you a great discount for VDJ)

hours and hours of fun = priceless!!!

These days $800 can go a long way towards a pretty respectable laptop.

Here are a few options that will be more than sufficient.

Big differences in these two options are that the the first one has 6GB RAM instead of 4GB and a 750GB vs 640GB hard drive and is a little cheaper.

Options 2 has a better sound card which also has a microphone input which can come in handy and has a slightly better processor.

With the exception of netbooks (which will work, but it's asking a lot of it) pretty much any new laptop these days will be good enough to run VDJ. If you're planning to do video however, I'd be looking a bit closer at the specs, and I'd also budget for a USB soundcard to go with it, as the onboard audio on laptops is nothing special. A basic lappy dedicated to VDJ (ie not clogged up with loads of other programs and internet viruses!), running windows - preferably stripped down to the bare essentials, coupled with something like a Numark Mixtrack Pro will give you a great starter system for not much money...
