easy question!
which one and why?
Im into mixing more so but like the idea of trying some scratching and like the idea of one whole unit, size isnt an issue but quality and performance mean everything.

NS6 is natively supported in VirtualDJ.
S4 is only support through user provided mappings.

NS6 = Virtual DJ supported. Jog wheel placement. Larger jog wheel. XLR outs, great for club use. Better design in my opinion.

VCI-400? I heard one reviewer of a yet to publish article say its a super controller.

s4 has more knobs for effect at 4 and a couple of encoders to manage the loops, ns6 has 2 fx parameters per deck, but you could map the fx select knob for a third, and loops are handled by an amazing 10 buttons, which seems a little overkill, both have buttons that could give you quick access to 2 effect slots, they are both pretty damn good, if you need one now id go with the ns6, but namm and more importantly the vci-400 is just around the corner... those two are good controllers but not nearly as solid as the vci, that thing is built to be abused!

just browsed the vci-400 briefly and looks nice, the only thing is how much mapping am i going to be doing with that? im pretty new to this and would love something not to difficult to setup and use. thanks for the heads up i will for sure keep that as an option.

I could only speak of what I have... the NS6.
I am quite satisfied with its: rugged built, size, over-all layout of buttons/knobs/faders, sound-quality, looks, and functionality. If you'll get used to 3-1-2-4 skin and mapping by CSTOLL, there's gonna be alot you can do compared to other older midi-controllers.
Goodluck!

S4 - not mapped to VirtualDJ
NS6 - already mapped - no effort on your part.
VCI-400 - not shipping YET - but you could pre-order if you are willing to wait. Most places are listing -> Out of Stock - Ships Feb,2012

I would get the NS6. Its a very nice in size and its very responsive. Its a comfortable deck to mix on compared to a smaller VCi 400 deck and Its also native with Virtual DJ. I wouldnt buy anything thats not native, even if it looks nice.

VCI 400 is native... but at the end of the day it depends if you want to scratch of mash sh*t up

For scratching, The NS6 is a more comfortable deck because of the 6 Inch jogs. The VCI looks nice but with all those buttons, It can get confusing when your mixing. The NS6 deck is nicely spaced out and it gives you all the main functions you need. Some djs ask for way too much features and most Djs dont even use them. The Feature that most new decks are coming out with is 4 decks and most Djs only use 2 decks.

It might be native ... but it doesn't start shipping for 3-4 months ...
Don't know how long he wants to wait ... and by then there might even be more choices to chose from to just add more to the decision :)

If you are looking to buy now, and based on your original request; the better choice is clearly the NS6.

what do you know that we dont chris?

What I know is that for the last year the average development of different controllers is about 6-10 every 3-4 months.
So, if you consider it has already been a month since BPM, there is most likely going to be any where from 10 or more that will be known by NAMM (in January) or Mobile Beat (in February).
So, again; if time is not an issue - then everyone can always keep waiting to see what might be next. If timing is an issue; then getting something now that fits ones needs (or desires) from what is available then there are several good options out there.
