Thanks for the support guys. Allot of my regulars were saying "it was just a tough crowd". I kind of hate to think that 120 people paying a steep door fee to get into this place, many of them who have seen me at other venues, did so just to sit and chat. But it sounds like it does happen. Being fairly new, I have never seen it that bad.
Love the Barney thing too and throw the crowd under the bus a bit. Lol, never would have though of that!
Thanks agian for the support guys! I will rock the next one for sure.

It's great that you care so much, this is natural progression, once you've been through this stage you'll come out the other side bolder and no crowd will be able to intimidate you, you need to go through this to get tough. You will start to see these situations as nothing more than a challenge and you'll use the opportunity to try out new stuff.
One thing that helps when you have nights like that is to do plenty of mic work, don't know if you do that.

I noticed you said you had some request but they off the wall or something like that. When we have nights like that we will play those crazy requests. Like Rick said sometimes it helps get the crowd in the mood, other times I say might aswell play what there asking for atleast you know those people are enjoying themselves.
Either way it happens and don't let it get the best of you, just rock it again and again.....

Yeah you might as well play those stupid requests that nutter in the corners keeps asking for seen as decent musics not working on them lol

My mic skills need work, I will be honest. But I have learned in other similar situations, anounce request you think will not work. That way they know it is a request and not that I am a tool. The same is probaly true that you need to interact before you get approched. I am just use to being very quiet and doing great mixes. That has always gotten me by. Year 1 in my club, I got picked over the other guys to do thier big contest at the end of the year, thier Christmas party and New Years. After that they stepped my pay up. So I have had a solid year of not saying much unless it was a contest, etc.
I am really strict about my source material all the way to final sound. More so than many DJs I have seen. I really do care about what people say and think about me. Like suggested, I probably need a thicker skin. Which I have been told most of my life in other cases.
The odd requests were "Sophi Needs A Ladder - Deadmou5" and "Closer - NIN". The Deamau5 one would be gret If the crowd was that kind of crowd, but it really wasn't at that time. The seconed one I just thought would offend the older crowd. So I held out till late (12:30 on a full floor) and I knew that those people were in the room and I could see them dancing. Both worked out great with that crowd and I put them in at the right moment. It was just holding those people off until then, that was the issue.

Hey everyone,
Some really great advice my friends! Having been in the industry for 17 years I can tell you I have had similar experiences. I've done clubs and private functions where despite playing hit after hit after hit, NOONE dances. First time that happened to me I was at a private event, and I was literally pulling my hair out. However, at the end I received countless compliments on the music...it seems they weren't a "dancing" crowd.
It does seem a little tougher when it happens at a local bar or club though, I guess expectations are a little higher. I've had nights like that at the weekly club gigs I have, especially the local watering holes - bars with a dance floor and a sound system, but not necessarily a "night club" or "dance club". Sometimes they just want to sit and drink…which may be hard for a DJ to comprehend, since our goal is always a packed dance floor, or at the very least a lively crowd. Keep your head up man, it happens. Keep moving forward and keep on spinnin’!

don't sweat it unless this happens more and more. i have 2 tricks....
1. the mic- i use the mic frequently to break the ice and let them know "we are in this together" and i welcome request.
2. we dj's often play bangers back to back to get them going and this "spoils" the crowd. the anticipation of "oh thats my song" is gone if every song is a winner. every so often i'll play a dud just to reset things. then come back with a heater. i think often u can be "too good"

Yeah deffinetly, your only as good as your audiance.
I can tell by the venue what type of a night I'm going to have.

I think what he meant is he purposely plays a dud to let his crowd feel the next rush of a good song rather than a string that lacks the ups and downs.
