Hi! I've been playing around with virtual DJ for a few months now and am pretty good at mixing, tansitionning etc using the sync button to equalize bpms and then starting song at the right time.
But beatmatching manually is an important skill to have I feel, so thats what i'm trying to learn. its hard not to rely on the little beat bars that VDJ gives you visually and not to look at the bpms of the songs which brings me to my question.
Should I be able to beatmatch two songs without knowing their bpm (say one is at 128 and another at 125, but i dont know they are)?
Also its a lot harder with songs that dont only consist of "un-tiss un-tiss un-tiss un-tiss" and vary in their beat, should i just loop a "beat part of the song and beatmatch based on that?
Also is there a preferable way to beatmatch: using the jogwheel or the tempo selector? cause i find the jogwheel alot easier to use.
Thanks for the help and sorry if these questions have been asked before.

you need to use both the pitch slider (tempo selector) and the jogwheel...
the pitch slider sets the speed of the playing track, up is slower down is faster...
the jog wheel will bend the pitch (speed) of a track while you are moving it, so you have to use both, I tended to move the pitch slider first and wait to hear what the change does to the tracks, then bend in place with the jog when I was learning, now i think I ride the pitch to get it close then ride the jog and make minute changes to the pitch to get it perfect, but that is usually done completely automatically in about 16 - 32 beats, with even finer adjustments whenever required.
just remember when you are learning to beatmatch don't cheat yourself and look at the waveforms as you are trying to do something that won't come instinctually to you, the only way it will become automatic is if you practice.

Beat matching takes time to learn. Alot of my songs have the wrong Bpm but it doenst bother me because, i never mixed by bpm. I just pick what songs sounded good together and i just blended them in. I just think of a song and then i think of another and play them to hear how they sound. Back in the days, I listened to the friday night mixes and hear how the djs mixed the songs. I would try to do the same or something alittle different. I would experiment with all types of music.

yupp, thats definately something i need to learn: not looking at the waveforms. its frustrating not knowing whether to go nudge forward or backward though...
any good skins you reccomend which hide the waveforms?
