I have read as much as I can absorb regarding DMX lighting. Having a computer programming background, the vast majority of DMX seems reasonably straight forward.
I like the perceived flexibility of a software based DMX solution and have been able to trial one product (Venue Magic) and got it integrated with Virtual DJ.
Does anyone have hands on experience with software based DMX controllers and feel confident to give a recommendation regarding reliable well engineered DMX controller software?
Thank you in advance.

If you want integration with VDJ then your choices are VenueMagic or FreeStyler at present. I've been asked to add DasLight which is popular too.

As far as I know that program (MyDMX) doesn't have sound to light function. Freestyler is pretty good (AND IT'S FREE) and is what I use with SBDJ's freestyler plugin.

Blizzard's Eclipse has beat syncing. It is very good, and you can try it for free from Blizzards Web Site.

If we're tossing out requests, what about Lumidesk?

Current options are VenueMagic, FreeStyler and TheLightingController (Sweet light/ShowXpress). Others can be added if they have SDK support.
I've been unable to get the Daslight SDK to work and Daslight support replied to my first message and then stopped.

What about DMXIS and Show Buddy by DB Audioware?

I personally swear by freestyler. Not only did SBDJ make an incredible plug in for it but the software is incredible for a free software. It does have a learning curve but once you understand it, it literally opens up the world as far your lighting goes and it allows me to do some insane light shows while I am playing.

I'm using Freestyler with the SBDJs plugin. Once you understand a few basics, it's pretty simple. There's still a few things I haven't got to work right, but it's doing the job as is.
Here's a clip of me messing around with it. I've since done way more stuff with it.

Dirk, your question is already answered in the second post:
VDJ itseld is not capable to control DMX-lighting but VenueMagic and Freestyler can both respond to commands, send by the plugins SBDJ wrote. For compatibility you could check the forum of DMXControl.de.
@AMAHM: The Enttec DMX Pro. I've been using the Velleman K8062. It works, but the response of this module is slow and it gets worse when using more DMX-channels.

I just bought an entec usb controller and it runs everything I have really well........ I dont notice any lag of course I use amplifiers for my longer runs and dmx terminators.... For under $50.00 I have a system that controls all my lighting .... well 300 of you count the 26 inch multitouch screen I use for cue points and overrides.....
