Last time I used VJD the program crashed and terminated after several hrs..... I thought no biggie, windows crashes frm time to time.....Now I plug in my
controller in (Herc. Control Steel) and get the message...."Invalid skin file (error in line 0 in the XML).....I haven't changed skins in MONTHS.....I
am also seeing that I should, by default (I THINK) a VDJ folder under "my documents" which is now missing as well. I back up VDJ onto an ext.
HD...so I copied the "local database" I had saved into "my documents" and relaunched VDJ, no change, same message..........What is my
problem fellas and ladies?.....I have a gig in 2 days, please HELP!!!!!!.........

Do you back up the entire VDJ folder or just the database?
Sounds like you need a complete reinstall if you have lost the whole folder...

Roy

So your asking about the missing VDJ folder,..... that confirms to me that there should be a VDJ folder automatically installed when I initially installed
the software under "my documents" by default, correct?...I never took the time to notice for sure, I only backed up the local database" which
holds my track BPM's's, playlists, etc., correct????.....So if the VDJ folder is gone from the default location of "my docs" on my PC HD root C: drive, I need to
delete VDJ and reinstall from the "VDJ, download screen online HERE?"......will my database then be recognized on my external HD after the re install?....Should be it seems to
me.........I assume that SOMEHOW the VDJ install or (root) folder deleted when the VDJ program crashed on me.....Makes no since, but
apparently I have no choice, but to re-install.......If my database is accepted though, I should be back where I started though you think?......

I deleted VDJ COMPLETELY and only left a copy of the old Database on a backup drive to attempt to re-install to save my cue points,etc.......I went to the "download
center", clicked the "PC Install" link, launched and followed the prompts. It installed, I re-booted, double-clicked the VDJ folder (icon now in my
desktop from the fresh install) and receive the following error message......."Cannot find the skin file in VirtualDJ Document or Library Folders.
Please Re-install application"......I reinstalled 3 times, same error message ( I re-booted each time as specified).....my PC is CLEAN....I work in "tech"....I ran malware
scans, rootkit scans, you name it.....What is my problem?????

Permissions?
Check the user you are using to install VDJ as has admin rights and also the user>documents>virtualdj folder
Also make sure the skin you were using when it stopped working is in the skins folder.

Maybe delete the skin in question, then re-download and install it in case it's got corrupted somehow?

what sort of computer is this? if its a laptop be aware that especially their hard drives which are submitted to knocks and other impacts do not unfortunately have a infinite life, and odd random crashes with Windows can be a sign of a impending hard drive failure. this sort of thing sounds suspiciously liike what happened to a laptop my mum gave me which had been repeatedly transported between England and Malaysia (her native country), and transported about whilst still switched on due to bizzare problems caused by that country's notoriously bad electricity supply and the battery/PSU drivers...
I fixed it by buying a new hard drive unit and it is now my backup VDJ machine. Especially if you are depending on this sort of kit for your income then with computers being ever cheaper and VDJ giving a double license for two computers I'd go to the precautions of obtaining a second computer as a backup against this sort of incident (you can always use it for other purposes when not DJ'ing).
Though no longer in the professional AV industry myself (more secure careers in "normal" ICT) I build resilient systems for critical purposes and always advise my employers to keep backup hardware rather than be caught out by failures at inopportune times. This has paid off more than once and saved us lots of cash and kept people safe too (I work in ICT for healthcare).
