I'm a new user, just in the process of organising my material & generally familiarising with the program.
I have a second laptop all set up for emergencies. Can I clone VDJ on laptop A so that VDJ on laptop B will behave exactly the same way?
In my current program, Swift Elite, I can back up all the settings in Swift laptop A and restore them onto Swift laptop B, and laptop B basically then thinks that it's laptop A.

Yes you can, but it's a "manual" process.
You need to "sync" the "My Documents\VirtualDj" folder on both PC's and afterwards just use the same settings between both installations inside the configuration window.

You can also do it automatically via cloud based services if you're feeling brave .....

Excellent, that's good news. I'll look into the Dropbox method I think, though manual may be sufficient.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I've messed up. Dropbox is on both A and B machines, the Virtual DJ folder is in Dropbox, I've modified the Home pathway via the Registry Tool to Dropbox, but the B VDJ is not the same as the A VDJ. I haven't done a lot, just set a few cues, created a couple of virtual folders & added a number of comments to test a quick search by comment keywords. None of these exist in B VDJ though.
I copied the VDJ folder from Dropbox and placed it back in Documents and changed the Home location in the Registry Tool and that didn't give me the result I was after either.

There are 3 things you need to take care/notice:
1. Your media files must be on the EXACT same location on both laptops. Please notice that if you store your media files inside "My Music" folder, then the path is usually different between 2 different laptops
Eg: C:\Users\Dell User\Music <--> C:\Users\Toshiba User\Music
As you can see the BOLD section is not the same. You must be sure that you have the same username on both laptops if you wish to store media files inside the "My Music" folder and the "sync" to work.
2. VDJ holds 2 different kind of settings. The settings regarding your media files (media database for instance) and mappers/effects will always sync via Dropbox since the files holding this info are located inside the home path of VirtualDj. However the program settings (eg Smart play On/Off) will never sync via Dropbox since these settings are held inside the Windows Registry
3. Dropbox will sync your files when VDJ is NOT accessing them. In other words don't expect to make a change on laptop A and see it "instantly" on laptop B. You must close VDJ and make sure that your laptop remains powered enough time to upload the changed files to Dropbox. On the other side when you power up laptop B you must make sure that Dropbox has enough time to download and update the changed files BEFORE you start VDJ.
PS: If you are using an external drive for your media then you must use the SAME drive on both PC's and it MUST have the same drive letter too! (If you don't know it already VDJ holds a separate database file on the root of each drive besides the system/OS drive). So, if you change a song's info on laptop A that's located on drive E: for instance and you expect to see this change in laptop B that uses a "cloned" drive E: it won't work. You must unplug the original "physical" hard disk from laptop A and plug it on laptop B to see the changes. Otherwise you'll have to manually update the database of the cloned drive...

Thanks, I appreciate the detailed info.
I don't think pathway is the problem, both machines have a D partition and the pathway is simply (DATA) D>DJ Music. All subfolders are identical.
I have closed and opened both programs but it doesn't make a difference, they are separate entities.

I think this is where my problem lies. I copied the Laptop A database file to Laptop B and now both programs are more similar. Is that something I will need to do from time to time or is there another way to keep them synced?

Drop box should do that automatically if set up correctly.

If your media files are stored on drive D:\ then you should "manually" sync their databases. On both PC's you will find a file named "VirtualDj Local Database V6.xml" on the root of the D: drive. You should copy this file from Laptop A to Laptop B each time you want them to "sync"
I don't know if you can setup Dropbox to "sync" these files automatically though. I too use Dropbox the last 3 months and everything works as it should.
PS: I use an external hard drive that once in a while (every time I add new media files) I clone on a second "backup" drive. What I have done is that inside Dropbox I have made a folder named "Ext Drive DB Backup". I manually copy my externals HDD database on this folder after each event.
This way if I ever have to use my backup drive all I have to do is to download the db from Dropbox and copy it on the root of the backup drive. After that EVERYTHING is the same on both systems.

Copying & pasting the database file is good enough for me, it's only for a backup machine after all. If you've ever had a failure right when you don't need it you'll know what a relief it is just to get through the night! If you're software isn't quite up to date by a few weeks it's not a biggie.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
