Hello All! DJ Butla here. I'm creating this Post to say thanks to the Virtual DJ/Atomix Team, the forum community and DJ's everywhere; Beginner to Pro. So without further Adieu...
THANK YOU GUYS FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!
I'm a true defender/supporter of the program, the platform( digital DJs and Midi-Performers ), and DJs in general. Virtual DJ had a very pivotal role in me still DJing today, to which I will share to show my appreciation.
Before all of that though, here are some questions for you guys to brain chew on and share in the forum below!
What was your first time using VDJ like?
What was your oh Cool! moment?
When was the first time you played out using Virtual DJ?
What made you fall in love with DJing?
IT GETS LONG HERE so scroll to the bottom for the TL;DR!!
In highschool I handled the music for the dance group I was in, As I was "good with computers". I found some audio editing software online and made some pretty decent mixes, albeit pre-edited.
Fast forward to a DJ Clue concert I attended. I manage to sneak around back of the DJ booth and lo and behold! A Computer!? With DJ software??!?! (note: it wasn't VDJ. It was a software that did have a name for itself at that time, but is no longer with us...) I can do that! I'm Good with computers.
I do another internet search and find some software, Overall Meh-ish about it.
And then a friend suggests Virtual DJ 3. He cant stop raving about it because he tried it at a friends house and he could make the scratching noise with his mouse by clicking and dragging the little disk. I didnt know the significance of scratching but by his enthusiasm about the whole thing, I am sold. I do another internet search and I find a version of the software( NAPSTER WAS STILL A BIG DEAL so yes it was pirated, no i didnt know any better, NOW I AM A PRO USER AND SUGGEST THAT EVERYONE GOES PRO. LIKE NOW!)
I tinker with it, get familiar, use it to spice up my mixes with some effect triggering and sample drops( Sweet record function), but I dont to any actual performances.
Fast forward to 2003, fall. A school friend knows I make mixes for my group and asks if I dj. I say I kinda do, I dabble in the digital DJ Debauchery. She states that she has a cousin in need of a baby shower dj and askis if i can help out. I am in high school and I have little to no personal life so I say sure.
I drag my old DELL COMPUTER( this was just after they dropped the cows Schtick and got eh gray circular dealy. Had a lift up slot for the usb ports it was a beast.) CRT monitor and keyboard, old bose amplifier/receiver unit and 2 Bose house bookshelf speakers and the oldest and crankiest speaker wire you could imagine. I played what they asked, and it all worked out well. I got 20 bucks and life was good.
Fast foward again to that same winter. December 22nd, I get a frantic call from the same girl. She rented out a bar, hired the staff and had a christmas party primed and ready to go, but no DJ. He tried to push up the agreed price and they refused so he walked the HOUR of the event. 50 people waiting to have a good time. I'm not doing squat but watching Toonami, I agree to help out again. Drag the ancient equipment out and we rock the house. At the time I had my personal collection of music, which was pretty decent, but not everything. People had CD's in their cars with songs they wanted to request. Sure! Grab your CD and drop it in, VDJ allows me to drag and Drop them THANGS! The original DJ shows up again, sees that it goes from 50 to close to 200 and he wants in. They kick him out and pay me double what they were going to pay him. SWEET!
However, the DJ bug didnt bite yet.
4 years pass, I join the military(AF) and dabble in VDJ in my off time, I say with the updates, messing with video, Learning keyboard shortcuts and seeing the new layout of the VDJ 5.
2007 hits, I'm in Aviano Italy. It's thursday, so its Stripper SHOW night at Club Bobes, and being the new guy I gotta go and see the show. We get there early to eat, drink and have general fun. I'm distracted by the fact that one of the bartenders is also managing the kitchen, and the music, and overseeing the door. Either this dude is the superman staff that clubs look for or something isnt right...
I peek at the DJ Booth, Its 2 Pioneer entry level CDJ's a Vestax mixer and about 5-6 300 disc CD Books Packed with music. I figure, Hey, lets see if wee can help this place out. I ask the guy if it'd be ok if I helped out.
He's the owner, Furious that his staff decided to show up late...
I re-introduce myself and re assure him that i just want to help. He stated that if I wanted an audition, I'lll have to come in another time to do that, but for now he'll accept the help.
He briefly shows me the ropes and gets back to tending what he can.
2 songs in, I'm playing. No, I'm DJing. THIS IS WHERE MY APPRECIATION FOR Virtual DJ COMES FROM! Using the function and interface of that program, I taught myself how to DJ. The layout was super simple. Tool tips gave me progressive little hints about what does what. Familiarity with the Keyboard Shortcuts assisted me in learning how to mix and drum in cues on beat. I was Groovin! 1100 comes around and the DJ has finally shown up. I switch out, and the owner lets me knowI'm Hired on the spot. He heard my mixing, was surprised at my technique for mixing ( thank you right mouse click!) and was really impressed. He gave me the saturday night shift to see if I could hold my own.
From there I went to thursday and saturday, to 3 different clubs, to including birthday parties, to Having a 2 Star General doing the Soulja Boy. Yeah, It got real.
I upgraded my equipment from a basic laptop to incorporating a Hercules MK2, to the RMX with 2 Denon DN-S3500s, to A VMS4 with 2 Numark CDXs( STAY AWAY FROM THESE DECKS) to Denon DN-S3700's and now a VMS4.1 with Denon DN-S3700's and 2 Stanton T62's with DVS Control Vinyls. I still use Virtual DJ(V7.0.5b Registered PROFESSIONAL VERSION) today and promote it as a professional and powerful DJ Program and tool. I love showing people the possibilities and love learning more about the program. I love the features and abilities. I love the ease of use and the versatility( I did Karaoke in Abu Dhabi for a bit. That was a pleasant surprise that VDJ did Karaoke songs and filetypes!) I can now easily adapt to almost any DJ setup and I know I have Virtual DJ to thank for this.
So thank you Atomix. Thank you Virtual DJ Team and Developers. Thanks you users, Thank you haters, thank you supporters.
TL;DR Started off making mixes, Saw a Digital DJ for DJ Clue, Pirated Virtual DJ, Did a few gigs, didn't take, Did a gig in Italy years later thanks to Virtual DJ, Became a proper DJ, got VDJ Pro for realsies, Thanks you guys!
SO! How about you?
