Clients always ask me for advice, my answer is always the same... "dont drag things longer than they need to be"
I always say this to clients because when things drag too long people will lose interest and find other things to do, like go hang around outside the venue and smoke.
Last night i did a wedding that started at 3pm... ceremony took 15 minutes and then guests had to hang around for 2.5 hours until the reception began 6pm (both were in the same venue, and they left to take pictures). Naturally by 10 pm everyone was exhausted and people started going home by midnight there were about 30 people out of 150.
The bride was obviously disappointed that people left early and her party wasnt bumping till early in the morning, but she acknowledged that i was right about my advice. Why dont people listen to us? We do this every weekend, we have seen our share of things, i like to think that i know what im talking about.
What advice do you guys/gals give your clients?

I advice them not to spend too much money on flowers.
And to be on time because guests don't like to wait.
One time the first dance of the couple started at 1:00 am.

That time between 3 and 9 need some form of entertainment, e.g. comedian, majician or solo artist.

I'd had a couple of gigs like that some had a small little dance entertainment shows for 30mins or so, or a family band only able to play for one or two sets due to prior engagements but still sat around for over an hour or more. I look at it like this yes we're getting payed to entertain the venue/ party and some of you are getting paid well I mean 3 digits an hour for a big venue wedding ect... But if I know I'm going to be sitting around for a while I take it upon myself and read the crowd and have some fun and start off slow in all reality were also their to have a good time also... and if the client says turn it off I do so then I wait cuz your paying me to sit on my ass until you want me to play is the bottom line!!!

These are the things I insist on. I must be the MC, not your sister, brother, etc. No request, I do not need any help. The songs I must play for the client, or parents, are already in a list. If it's a kids party, that's different. No new line dances at weddings. The learning curve is way too long. No singing, unless they have a karaoke package. Limit special occasion announcements, because we will be wishing happy birthday for a month ago, or next week. No, no, no, you can not say a few words over the mic, because everybody will want to say a few words over the mic. As you can see, all of theses things are interrupting me, from my job. Do you talk to the surgeon while he's working? The butcher? When you hire a plumber, you show him where the leak is, not how to fix it. All of my clients know how I work, before hand. I tell my clients that they will hear me say "welcome" and the next thing you hear will be " hope you had a great time". Time will speed by, when it's your party, so let's not try to cram a lot of activities into that time. In the end, if they want all those distractions, I can wait. As you said, I'm getting paid, but it takes away from the party time.

"Go party and leave me alone..."
"I GOT THIS!"
"You hired me because I know what i'm doing... Let me do it."
"Do I tell you how to do YOUR job?"
