Is there anyone out there using or know of a rental/hire software for free or at a reasonable price? My equipment list is very large at this point and I'm looking for better inventory control. I scoured the internet and have only found very expensive products to maintain in/out inventory.
Example: I was hired to do a 50th wedding anniversary last week and I used a very large inventory of equipment. Video projection stuff, Audio stuff, lighting stuff and a full laser show. I had also a band full gig that day and a small weekly club setup to do, all before my own gig. Well it doesn't happen often but I forgot a few cables for my own gig as it was the last setup in the late afternoon. It cost me over $100 and a lot of stress to source cables as I was far from my home office where I had some in inventory. I literly was able to run into a music store 5 minutes before it closed on a saturday evening.
I have been DJing for over 35 years now and not getting any younger and this problem has occured a few time a year in my 35 years. Lists are easy to make, etc but That doesn't help me to elimate inventory and make sure I have enough equipment and cables for all jobs on specific dates. A rental software whether from a software company or a microsoft access template for this type of control would work I'm sure.
If you are using something similar please let me in on it.
If I didn't find the music store or realize at the time I did that I had forgotten cables there would have not been any sound from my mixer to the amp rack and no video for the slideshow. That would have been very embarrassing to my company which is very well respected in Montreal.

Look for a small company that deals and develops "Excel" programmes, or you may have a friend that can help you out.
I can put you in touch with a company in the UK that I have used the services of in the past, they are very reliable and friendly.

I've got about $150,000 of equipment in my posession...
The barcode idea is great once I find a Rental/hire software at a reasonable price to plug it into.
Tayla, yes please hook me up.
A check list was great when I only did one or two functions at a time. I do live bands sound and light and just that alone is a lot of different cables and components plus on occassion I can do up to 5 different functions per night. I'm a very small company with a lot of equipment. Everything right now that I make $ goes into growing my business.
Hardwiring is not a good idea for me as everytime my equipment goes out it's never the same equipment at any given event. If I was just DJing or only one type of event each night, yes hardwiring is the best thing to do.
Thanks for your input guys. I will keeep searching for the right utility.

This is a barcode scanning complete system for $199. Looks to be many other products out there as well. I simply searched the phrase "small business barcode inventory software"......

Thanks, I found a rental software that also uses barcode scanning, etc. The one you made a link to is really just an internal inventory control software. It doesn't tell you where the equipment went or who has it. The rental software I just found is complete for the same price but I have to purchase a barcode reader which is not that expensive. It's called ESC-RENTAL. Looks like it has everything I need. Thanks for everyones input.
