Sujet: Asus G75?

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

I have been considering the G75 or maybe a refurb G74, but wanted to throw out a couple questions first.
I'm currently alternating between a MacBook Pro (meh) and a Dell m1710 XPS which is wonderful except that it has recently developed a white line across the screen. I plan to open it up and try fixing it (lose wire or solder joint most likely) but want to be prepared if/when it goes south.

In particular, I see DJEastCoast having expressed several times dissatisfaction with his Asus G73, to the point where he no longer trusts Asus.
These questions are geared towards getting some insight into his particular experience, but anyone else, please add your input as well.

Do you think that any of the issues could have been software related? Drivers, OS, excessive crapware, bloated registry?
Assuming you were happy with the machine when you first started using it, do you think that if you reinstalled the OS and VDJ fresh, you could bring it back to a 'happy place' ?
Were there particular hardware issues that lead to your disappointment?
Did you have any dealings with Asus support, and if so, how did that go?
Again assuming it worked well at first, how long was it before it went 'bad'?
For anyone who is happy with their Asus G-series machine, how long have you been using it?

Thanks for any input. I'm waiting to see what kind of deals Black Friday brings before I need to decide.

I'd like to first add that the G75 has 4 USB 3's. That and its size & weight are the only reasons I wouldn't buy one. I've never used Asus support so cant comment on that, but my problems with my G73 may have started when I began to install windows updates.

At one time my G73 ran flawlessly doing videos, Pangolin text-to-screen while running a NS7 FX.

I like the brand, just don't trust my unit.... it works, I use it in the house but I cant gig with it. I will eventually buy a second machine, but if I had to do it tonight it would be a 13" Mac Book Pro with 8 gigs, bootcamped with W7.

Thanks for the info.

I don't mind it being big, and don't mind no USB2 ports, as long as the USB3 ports work for USB2 devices.

I agree that keeping up with Windows updates may have caused problems. I had an HP ZD8000 with XP sp1 (factory installed) and never even put it online at all, and it was completely reliable for about 4 years, doing audio/video/karaoke with various controllers. Then I decided to try out some of VDJ's online features and connected it to the internet where it proceeded to 'update' itself. I didn't think much of it at the time, but it was never very dependable after that point.

Nowadays, you can't stay offline and be efficient, that's why I switched Mac for a while, but VDJ just isn't the same on MacOS. I may bootcamp my MacBook (with Win8 once its dust settles) if I can wrestle it back from my daughter who thinks its hers now.

I use an asus g74sx and I love it, I did have a problem once with a windows update but I just rolled it back and it solved my problem, the only thing I hate about it is the bulky size and weight, it's a monster but I get plenty of power with intel i7 CPU, 16gb ddr3 ram and Nvidia GTX 560m with 3gb GDDR5....great specs

Those are nice machines!! Looks like its time to start saving........
