I've been trying my hand at remixing lately and wanted to see what other programs people are using. I literally have no real starting point...I'm trying to teach myself but have little direction. Anyone trying this and can offer some advice?

Sony Acid is pretty good for what DJs generally regard as "remixing" i.e. adding some extra loops over the original track.
Ableton Live is the king of warping - taking an old track with unsteady tempo and straightening it out so it's easily mixable.
If you're remixing from the original multitrack stems though, a full-on DAW like Cubase would be the tool to use.
