What do you mean by "a deck"?

What's your budget? What sort of DJing do you do?

I would prefer the VSM4.1

4 channel
2x mic
19"
touch sensitive jogs
XLR-out
analogue mixer unit
metal plate

FYI those are commonly known as controllers.

The word "deck" usually refers to a vinyl turntable, although sometimes it's used for CD players i.e. a pair of Pioneer CDJs may be called "CD decks" by some people.

My suggestion is the Stanton DJC4.

I can vouch for the Stanton DJC.4, it has plenty of buttons and knobs although I will say I wish the soundcard was louder. I just run into another mixer and were good to go. It's also a 4 deck unit, decks 3 and 4 are layered.

Thanks for the info guys

So the recommended controllers are

Stanton DJC4
Vms4.1

What are the pros and cons of each controller?

Thanks

You can see the differences by looking at them.

The VMS has got two mic inputs. They're on XLR and they have three way EQ for each mic.

There aren't many other controllers with that - especially at that price. Most have just one input, on a jack, with no EQ.

Whether that matters or not is up to you. That's your own preference.

The VMS has also got four channels which can be independently switched between computer and external input.

One that might be worth waiting for is the new Gemini G4V. In some respects similar to the VMS (four channels) but with sample pads.

It's only got one external input though, so whether that matters is up to you.

Can't speak for the vms4.1, but the DJC4 is an awesome unit!! It's packed full of features that may seem cumbersome for a beginner but you can ignore the extra stuff until you grow in to it. if you use it live, it has an emergency through input in case your system crashes and the mic and master volume also work without your system running as long as you have external power going to it (powered USB hub will work).

Quick question.....When I record a mix using my VMS4, I hear the music from my headphones on the mix as well, but the audience cannot hear it. I want the music that the audience is listening to to get recorded to the mix, not what I can hear on my headphones as I am preparing to transition songs. Does this make sense?

Nice hijack bro, post this in the hardware forum and then search the wiki for recording instructions........

I'd go for numark mixtrack pro or pro ii on your budget.

yeah I would wait for more details on the Mixtrack Pro II, it should be a low cost controller. But if u need a controller now, then u know what to buy from the previous posts....

Actually u can get the MixTrack Pro (1) for very cheap on ebay. You will need to buy VDJ PRO separate as the new units come with Serato Intro.

mixtrack pro has served me well, I was surprised how responsive it was, looks a bit plastic, but has worn well !, very good value for money, check out the mk2

Hey Guys

Thanks for taking the time to post your views i really appreciate it.

So the recommendations so far:

VMS4.1

STANTON DJC4

NUMARK MIXTRACK PRO 1 OR 2

given your experience which one would you go for? i would also consider upping my budget to a controller that will take me from the begineer stage to the intermediate. i like the idea of a controller with sample pads as i've seen djs on youtube make outstanding effects with these.

again your comments and feedback are greatly appreciated.

Chris

I suggest that you go to a music store, or a friend, and see these controllers, personally. You will need to handle them to see if they are a fit for you. If you do not try them for yourself, you may not like the layout, or the way it feels. What each one of us likes, may not suit you.

I would say VMS4.1 or the STANTON DJC4. Both can have audio ran through them in case your laptop dies. I ditched the VMS4 cause I never could get the timecodes to work properly but that was with the old version. The Mixtrack was just boring as it didn't have enough buttons or knobs for me so I sold that quick. Plus its worthless without a laptop. The new version looks nice but after reading the review from Phil

its just smoke and mirrors to me plus I hate having to use shift all the time which is what I get from this. Also the pads are just on/off buttons not something you can just drum on so it probably wouldn't last..........nice effort but a no go from me.
