I am thinking about building my own light totems.
Anyone have any ideas?
I don't see me using PVC for this because I don't think it will be strong enough or stable enough.
This is just an idea at this stage so any input would be helpful.

I want it to be mobile, lightweight but STABLE, easy to breakdown and setup.
Any ideas?

Are you building this yourself to save money or doing it for the joy of the project?
If the cost is priority take a look here, http://www.cheaplights.com/cart/page122.html
4 and 6 foot sections and the base available for 1/3 the price. Not sure if the total weight would be sufficient at 35 lbs for the 4 footer and 43 lbs for the 6 footer. And its black not chromed.
I've never purchased anything more than a few replacement lamps from this site but they've always been quick to ship and respond well to customer needs.
Keep us posted, I like to watch projects come together.
Good luck,
T

I went to their store in Houston and seen some of their steel trussing. It should have no problem holding up a moving head light or 2. Depending on your weight / size of your light you may want to get a wider truss.

Both.
Good find. I like the black trussing. Is still a little expensive so if I can make something on my own that will be less expensive and more potable, that would be great.
I've built my own facade and my own scrims. The totems will be iceing on the cake.

How about building a collapsible totem. this would allow it to very mobile.

That is my intention. I just have to figure out how and what materials to use.

See what some fab shops would charge for this. I work in a welding supply store (Sell welders, rod, wire, helmets and what not) If you know anyone that can tig weld aluminum/stainless then your largest cost would be material. Thats all I can really suggest. I was thinking MDF but if your looking for something like in your picture MDF isn't light and not overly strong.
