Hi Mac users and some PC users,
Today I found an easter egg feature that I forgot was in my Macbook Pro.
This might be old news for most but might be news to some of you.
The Macbook Pro has a dual purpose soundcard that is both analog and digital. If you plug a mini fibre optics cable (toslink spdif) into the headphone jack the Macbook will switch to digital output mode and send upto 32bit float/96khz audio signal to a external DAC ( digital to Analog converter) or amplifier. You will notice a significant increase to your sound quality when not using a professional DJ controller that has a professional DAC built in.
You will find that even mp3 @ 44.1 16bit sound better as they are scaled upto 96khz.
Latency is also fantastic at 1ms.
The good news is most consumer amplifiers have this type of digital input built in.
I am using it with an old Edirol FA-66 external DAC sounds great. I am going to buy a little Numark DJ2GO controller and use this setup for small house parties.
If you try this make sure you go to your Audio and Midi setup (found under applications and utilities) and change your default setup to from 44.1khz to 96khz and 16bit to 32bit float.
I hope this improves your sound.
