Sujet: DJ Tools: Next Version

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

Hello gang,

I have been contemplating creating the next version of my app "DJ Patterns" (available here under Tools) and DJT2 (available on my site: http://blissgig.com/display.aspx?id=10)

The idea is to create a Windows 8 app (yes, I understand that some people are unhappy with Win8, let's not go down that path)

I am a professional software developer, not a dj. I use VDJ as a hobby. I am thinking of a collection of ideas, including the ability to share playlists so that other djs can share popularity of tracks. This would mean that I would create an online db to hold this info.

This app would be free, and have no advertising. I do these apps as a way to explore newer technologies and to keep myself busy. So at this point I am looking for any and all ideas.

Peace,
James

Only issue with building a native app is the sandbox. I'm doing stuff in .Net 4.5 at the moment and I can easily scan for playlists, track listings, load the databases and even look in the registry.

With a "Modern App" you have far more restrictions. Would be keen to work with you on this one to see what can can't be done.

Cheers,

Roy

Roy,

I'm always happy to work with others. It's a primary reason I recently quit my job. Always working alone. Feel free to take a look at my site: Blissgig.com to see if my abilities reach your talent. I think highly of myself, and yet know there is a LOT I do not know.

I'm currently working on Bedia NV, a Win8 version of my Bedia app. It's a media player for your tv (10ft interface) and you are correct, there are some real restrictions and I why MS did what they did, but depending on what people here want (if they want anything) will dictate why I write, or attempt to write based on capabilities of the available technologies. EG: would something from the Kinect have any value? Do users sharing real time playlists have value?

I'm willing at this moment to entertain any idea, just looking to expand my thoughts and hopefully create something that helps.

I have regular sessions with MS. The whole sandbox thing is a strategy for all Modern Apps regardless of device type.

Microsoft do not see Modern Apps as a replacement for desktop apps, they are modelled in a very different way with the whole suspend/tombstone model.

for example, I could never see VDJ as a Modern App...

I think you could create a nice VDJ analytics tool or a forum app, but for doing the kinda stuff you'd want to do in a "tools" application, I'd be surprised if you could do anything other than a desktop app.

Doing lots of prototyping in VB.net at the moment. Working with the VDJ database, playlists and history. I usually prototype in Access, but Access doesn't support UTF-8.

Cheers,

Roy

Roy,

Thanks for the feedback. If I do analytics I am thinking of using SQL Server, via my site or SQL Server Express for user's local. But at this time I am only looking for ideas to see what info everyone would like, what features that could be helpful

I've got an idea (at least two years old) that I'd like to see implemented....

See my posts here

I've tried to get developers interested before, including those close to VDJ/Atomix, but nothing's happened.

I think it'd be a very useful tool.

GroovyDJ,

I will think about the possibilities of this, I haven't checked to see if the ability to create Virtual Folders is something that is exposed to external developers.

thanks again.

I'm out in Cali to make Thanksgiving for my mother in law, so until I get back to NYC none of this will happen. In fact I am currently working on the next version of another app (http://www.blissgig.com/display.aspx?id=21) and this is why i am taking requests now so that I can start thinking about the abilities of the next version of the DJTools

Have a great turkey day and be sure to eat too much

It doesn't actually need to be a virtual folder, or even done inside VDJ at all in fact.

As long as the ability is there to compare a list of tracks to the VDJ database contents and store the results somewhere (M3U or whatever) so it can be used within VDJ.

Thank for the clarification, that helps.

I hope to finish off Bedia NV in the next 60 days and then move on to this project. Before that time I will post on the board a list of specs to insure that I am on the right track.
