AFAIK DDJ-S1 (or any other DDJ series controller) does not have batteries built in aka it does not run on batteries.

Is there any chance you mean something else ?

it has an adapter which is plugged into sockets, when it is plugged in the lights on the decks are on, does it work limitless without the adapter plugged in?

USB MIDI controllers like the S1 do not have batteries.

Some controllers are powered purely via the USB cable, getting 5 volts from the computer (when the computer is on).

Others have a power supply too - either because they require more power than the computer can supply, or because they have functionality that doesn't require the computer to be on (such as mixer inputs).

I guess you're making a comparison with a laptop. Laptops do have batteries because they are designed to be used anywhere. Most DJ controllers are not designed for use away from mains power.
