Is there a way to zoom/unzoom in the POI window without a wheel? I cannot figure how to do this on a laptop.

There is
Put your cursor at the edge of the blue selection area above the wave form. It will change from the arrow to the double arrow.
Hold a left click on it and drag to resize causing the zoom level to change.
After its resized, you can also click in the blue area and drag it to change your location in the song.
