hi. i got my first gig coming up on the 4th of July. trying to figure out:
1) how do i set up my controller/headphones to hear my next song w/o it coming through the speakers?
2) my sandbox feature doesn't work. looked at tutorials to learn this feature but no go.
3) what are the most common transitions that dj's use?
any input would be helpful. thanks in advance.

1. Depends on what gear you are using.
2. Depends on the file type you are playing, if a effect is active, what sound setup you are using in VDJ and if the deck is playing over master or not. See the manual for a detailed description.

Did you mixed something before buying your actual controller? for your questions seems you're not familiar with dj gear.
Give more details of your hardware please

Also please be aware that the controller license is for home use only.

I thought that you could do a gig with a controller licence if you don't earn money.

Thanks for the input. I'm using the Numark NV & only mp3s. I've been using VDJ7-8 before my controller

That is true, the condition is,
Paid work = pro licence
Unpaid work = any licence.

Back on topic, intro-outro is usually easy as key rarely comes into play, looping the intro & mixing/chopping into the outgoing song is again easy. Main to main is technically more involved, key, syncopation and rhythm have to be considered.
Consider your slot, are you warm up or headlining? This is very important to track selection, energy levels and how much technical effort is required.
Are you taking requests? This is something to watch out for as the general punter is great at selecting the wrong track at the wrong time.
All in all practice, record, review, practice, I remember my first gig and the adrenalin was such a kick.

Thanks for the input sir. what transition would you use when there a BPM jump & change in key?
Posté Sat 20 Jun 15 @ 12:37 pm
when u say what transition do you mean in automix or mixing manually?
Posté Sat 20 Jun 15 @ 12:56 pm
Bpm change isn't an exact science, it's one of the most technical dj challenges, I have a few tracks that switch up bpm radically (+/- >=30%) as a drop, so I use them if suitable.
looping the outgoing, pitch(slider) lock and pitch reset in busts can work but can also sound terrible.
Bpm transition isn't really something taught, it's something you learn yourself.
As for key, the camalot wheel is something to study, (but don't follow it religiously) intro-outro key rarely matters. Main to main you'll hear the clash in your phones when cueing, to familiarize yourself with the bad sound of a key clash, practice with mismatched keys, some tunes will work, (because key is measured in 12 finite steps but is actually an infinite scale) most won't, but repeated exposure will sensitise you to (pre-)hear a clash even with intro-outro.
Practice, practice, practice & mix in your head.

Sorry i wasnt specific but i meant manual. Also, how do you set up your mix so you can hear it through the headphones but the crowd cannot? isn't that what the sandbox feature is for? if so, mines isn't working correctly. again, Thanks
Posté Sat 20 Jun 15 @ 8:00 pm
No that is not what the sandbox is for.
There are buttons above the faders in each channel it has a picture of a set of headphones on it.
the proper term for this button is really called a PFL
If you have the button pushed and lit up then it should send the deck you want to hear in your headphones in your headphones and not the speakers. IF you have your cross fader all the way over one way. and IF you don't have the "deck" or channel on the same side. You can quickly assign the channels to a or b
