Well that was an unusual gig for me this evening. My PC crashed twice during a karaoke gig - no warning, it just got to the end of a track and shut itself down. Twice.
I've been running version 8 for some time, and had no real issues with stability in the last year, hence I hadn't got round to upgrading to 8.1 - you know, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and all that. Well, I got home and tried the songs that it crashed on, and sure enough, it did the same thing again. Frankly this was a relief that I could trace the problem to a bad file rather than some random unexplained crash. It seems that these particular karaoke tracks (which I've had on the system for years, but never played before tonight) have an unusual CDG part to them. At the end of the song, the brand name of the karaoke company scrolls across the screen, and it was this scrolling CDG text that VDJ didn't like, causing it to shut down. I upgraded to 8.1, tried it again, and hey presto, the tracks play just fine.
So to anybody who hasn't gotten around to moving from version 8 to 8.1, I'd say go for it, especially if you're doing karaoke!

Glad this worked out for you. There is a good reason for most updates, and this software is no different than any other. When I get an update from Windows, I don't hesitate to install, I do the same for Virtual DJ. Now an upgrade is different and I will wait for Windows 10, until after the new year.
