So here's my question. I'm trying to use the headphone on my laptop and the external mixer (Numark mixtrack quad).
I need to be able to preview a song with my headphones that won't effect the main output which would be the headphone jack on the numark. I have tried a few of the recommended tricks but the results are either I get the same output on both headphone jacks (which doesn't help) or I get no sound from one or both. I am running vdj8. If I am missing something please inform me or show me where I need to go.

The main output is not the headphone jack on the Numark.
It's the RCA sockets marked "output" on the back of the Numark. The headphone socket (on the Numark) is for previewing / cueing. When using an external controller which has an onboard audio interface, you don't use the laptop headphone socket. There's no need - the Numark has all the appropriate features.
