I just got an SX2 today. How do I get virtual DJ to recognize the controller? I have a mac and when I plug in the controller the effects light above channel four just blinks.

Did you install the necessary drivers ?
http://www.pioneerdj.com/en/support/software/ddj-sx2/#drivers
Apart from the Effect LED that blinks as you said, what exactly doesnt work for you ?

He shouldn't need to download drivers with it being a Mac, I don't think?
You can try updating the firmware of the controller, check the Pioneer website for the how-to. Some say that you don't always need to update firmware, but I did when I got my SX2 to make it work correctly.
Also, did you check the audio settings in VDJ to see if it recognizes the controller when you plug it in?

DDJ-SX and DDJ-SX2 indeed will blink the FX2 assign button when USB cable is connected, but connection with the host is not established.
On my case (I'm on Windows) this led blinks only during a reboot of the computer.
This information is NOT official (it's not documented by Pioneer) but it has been confirmed.
