The manufacturers often limit the possible upgrades on a budget laptop.
My X58L has two memory slots, one which has 4gb's fitted, but the other has a factory marking saying 1gb maximum. I'd guess it's not a hardware restriction so it must be the bios?
I have tried installing many different memory types and size..all fail.
For someone who is preaching the virtues of: Win10 control panel-->system and security-->performance monitor.. I've only recently started using it!
Yes, it's standby as you say Adion.
It's light usage at the moment, just 1351mb in use, 606mb standby, and 3118mb free but I have seen it up to 2.5gb standby when pushing my laptop.
I like to see some memory free.
Is that needed?
Remember I have onboard graphics and that uses my memory.

No need, for windows getting a bit of standby memory or getting a bit of free memory is the same speed, so both are fine.
Standby just means windows used it to cache items that may be needed later (programs or files that you frequently use).
Since these items are always available from hard drive as well, they can be safely discarded from memory if another program needs it.

Hm.. that means 4gb of memory is more than enough to run VDJ8.2 on an optimized laptop.
I still want a little more lol.
Quad core cpu's are interesting.
In the case of a budget dual core one cpu dedicated to windows update is critical.
When using a budget quad core there might be no need to disable windows updates, the cpu might be fine, but memory again might become an issue, however 6gb would easily be adequate.

Ok..I've got tellyvisuals running with milkdrop as a background, music playing and text over the top. Tellyvisuals provides push button text messages, and a panel for my contact details..phone and email. It's awesome!
The point.. it's all using little memory (1.3gb) and cpu power (less than 30% of a old 2.4ghz dual core).
However if I start using my video samples as well then i can hit 60% cpu usage.
I optimized milkdrop so why not do the same for the video samples!
By that I mean use something like xvid at a slightly lower bitrate.
Note that there is no need to run everything at once, I'm just testing my laptop.

And that's what separates the men from the boys......
A guy like me needs to run all that at once plus more!

Don't be like that Beatbreaker LOL!
You're a specialist video DJ, I'm a mobile something or other.
I hope you took note that it seems I can easily run it all together with a target cpu usage of around 30%.
Does it really matter if someone is using 10, 30 or 50% of their cpu?
Just don't go into the red!
DJ's should know all about that issue.
What I really want to do is promote good computer management skills for digital DJ's.
Even An Asus Rog will have its limitations.

Lol!!
But on the issue of how high your cpu should be, I'd say it matters because after awhile things will heat up and that's are enemy, lol!!
Here's a test, set everything up and run all of what you mentioned above and then record it straight to an MP4.
Let me know your results.

I thought record was just for music (mp3, wav, flac..)?
Hm ..mp4?
Another point is I had milkdrop running behind a video sample hence it can't be seen!
I've started recording but I don't want to display my contact details. I might post something.

Let him do his research, keep removing this, optimizing that, shut this down. His time has a different value then you or I. We are trying to do more, in less time. He is spending more time, to do less. I don't get it, but don't have too. Let him teach the masses how to do it with less, because the world needs more DJs that are on a budget.
Posté Mon 23 Jan 17 @ 11:09 pm
I don't think you do get it AMAHM..my laptop is becoming a little like my heart, I feel it beating and can respond to its needs.
Pathetic..
Let him teach the masses how to do it with less, because the world needs more DJs that are on a budget..
Atomix needs to sell software. The masses would do them fine.

Hm it did not record as a dynamic moving video. Just one frame and the music.
Posté Mon 23 Jan 17 @ 11:20 pm
This thread is making me a little suspicious since it benefits Atomix.
AMAHM could be playing the Devils Advocate..but VDJ8.2 is great software, and I'm in no ones pocket. I never have been, and never will be.

Ok my reason for asking you to record is that I've had MC's/Rappers ask if I could record they're set live.
Now I'm all about money, so I said sure give me "X" amount of money and at the end of your set I'll basically have a music video of your set.
Some have doubted me but after them seeing what I did as they were rapping blew them away!!
So think about this, if you had a superb singer on one of your karaoke nights. You could offer them a video that sounds and looks great of they're prefomance!!
BOOM!! Quick easy money!!
You could even do this for a bride and grooms first dance!! Offer this as yet another service that only VDJ can help you do!
But........ You need that extra horse power, lol!!
You wanna be the best you gotta have the best. ;-p

Hm..l suppose I could then sell my professional video camera!?

I don't want to tread on peoples toes..but the first sample I looked at was "dance" by djwilo. Its file size installed is 8.6mb, and its a mp4 file called loop.mp4.
OK so I optimized this file, it matters little if I use mp4 or xvid. This is just a cartoon with people dancing but it did cause a twitch in my VDJ wave display. For normal video I use xvid and a constant encoding rate of 2500kb/s. This is just a simple cartoon so 2000kb/s is more than enough, and I used xvid (avi). The resultant file size is 952kb..less than 1mb. This is a massive reduction in file size!!!!!
Unduly large video samples could easily choke the life out of a laptop.
Note: I've just loaded the optimized video sample back into VDJ and there is a big improvement!
I wonder how many samples are much larger than is needed?

On optimizing the loop "dance" I found vdj cpu use fell from around 50% to 10% when playing with music, and tellyvisuals.
It's like our budget laptops are being murdered to assist the uptake of high end gaming laptops.
Note even high end laptops will choke on unsuitable large files, and extremely high bitrates.
No one is immune.. not even AMAHM.

Try converting to HAP format for your samples. HAP will use your GPU instead of your CPU.
Wait your using the onboard graphics card, right??

Yes I have onboard graphics but more memory than the designers of my laptop expected. This memory is permitting a high level of performance from an old laptop.
I'm starting to get cpu usage down to 10%.

I don't have all the tools I need. Windows performance monitor is good for cpu and memory, but all I have for graphics is a twitchy vdj wave display.
CPU-Z might be what I need, it's what the gamers use.
No, its not what I had in mind.
However it did give me lots of information, and I was surprised to see that my Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset was rated as having 384mb of graphics memory, that must be due to my 5gb of main memory. Atomix recommend 256mb min for a video dj.

I suspect that vdjsampler files may contain DRM. I could not change the extension using windows to mp4, and get the samples to work. Anyway I did convert a couple of .vdjsampler files to avi (xvid), and got a 10% reduction in cpu usage, 50% down to 40%, which is not really enough to justify the messing around. These files may be reasonably well optimized.
