I will admit I have way too much music {14 TB} and I am doing my best to eliminate dups. My hip/top 40 goes back to 2000 plus many folders. When Start up it and i do a search for an artist it wants to scan on every search. What am I doing wrong? It starts and then locks me up so I cannot load a track or I get freeze thanks folks in advance

Do you have the File Date column visible and sorted by perhaps?
Were the files scanned before?

no i do not. will that make it so only new tracks are scanned? or do I go er the scan a range?

On slow hard drives the file date column might slow down things as it needs to be read from disk.
To prevent scanning of unscanned tracks on view you can set analyzeSongsOnView option to No.
Normally this shouldn't lock up things, but with slow external drives it could be an issue.
To make sure all your tracks are scanned ahead of time you can right-click your music folder and select Batch->Analyze for BPM and just let it scan at home.
