Revamped Controller Screen device selection causing crashes to close menu (also slightly confusing):

Sort brings up unintuitive menu that won't disappear, and it moves around the screen:

Suggestion to improve Controller Screen UI, make it more intuitive, less clicks during gigs etc.

I don't want suggestion (#3) to detract from the problems (#1 and #2), but the reason suggestion #3 would be more intuitive, is because device is only set up once. After that you most frequently want to go to this screen to change deck from 1 to 2, or 2 to 1, or to very occasionally remap something.
When plugging in venue equipment to VirtualDJ, the CDJs (seemingly at random, but probably not random) will often skip the option to choose Deck 1 or Deck 2 (or 3 or 4). This is a different screen on the CDJ than when you plug it in the same way via Rekordbox, however Rekordbox will nearly always ask for deck selection, and if it doesn't it certainly will if you unplug it again. VDJ unhelpfully seems to 'remember' this even after an uplug, which means you have to reset CDJ, causing frustration and lots of fiddling when it gets it wrong (Auto Selection VDJ option gets it wrong a lot of the time).
From memory, holding EJECT (mapped to "invert_controllers" by default) on the CDJs that still have that button seemed to jump from deck 1 to 3 instead of 1 to 2, or 2 to 4 instead of 2 to 1, making things even more confusing.
A far friendlier way to resolve this would be to have it always ask for deck selection. Whilst it takes an extra half second when connecting, it saves 15-30 seconds every time it gets it wrong (I'm guessing around) 50% of the time.
Perhaps this suggestion #3 should really be flagging the issue that CDJ doesn't always ask for deck selection when reconnecting.

As you're using a touch screen, I'd suggest using one of the skins designed for touch screen use.
Also there's a touchscreenmode option in the settings, that changes the UI to suit touch use.

Thanks GroovinDJ, appreciate the reply. I initially used touchScreenMode when I moved to this laptop, but I found it very buggy and unintuitive, forcing changes that I don't want (just listing some feedback below for VDJ Team):
-It forces Grid Mode, meaning either you now have to gaze down two columns, or with a single column you can only see about 1/4 of the tracks you could previously see. Without the standard list, your gaze is all over the place when looking for the info you need.
-You have to manually change your Font Size/Padding/Display back to the settings you want every time you change back (Font Size button doesn't toggle the settings I want).
-In Grid Mode the "Display Options" is removed altogether (see pics below).
..so after a couple of weeks I swapped back. The last touch skin was updated in 2021, and I was told by my concierge during Pro Business Support to use a default skin to prevent excessive (CPU?GPU?) usage. Can't remember the exact wording because they won't give me a transcript of my support.
It kinda feels like changes get made by people who don't use the functions on a regular basis, and they don't really test things out much, they just wait for people to bring it up in the forums.
Just to circle back on the original bugs for VDJ team (hopefully they can address them soon):
1. Menus won't disappear when clicking outside of them. In the new Controller Screen UI it brings one up needlessly (menus should really only come up after long click, not single click, IMO), and the only way to get rid of the menu is to click an item, which causes a crash.
2. Controller Screen UI brings up menu that makes using VDJ more difficult*
3. Make CDJs always ask for Deck Number when connecting them
*PS - can we please just have VDJ follow normal touch screen rules that come with Windows? I mean, to make it not have special UI rules for touch screens (eg bring up a menu like in video 2, rather than just change the sorting order. Long click brings up menu/simulates right click. Drag/scroll with two fingers or whatever windows settings are)?

The crash in controller screen should be fixed in current Early Access build
Posté Thu 21 Mar 24 @ 5:37 am
Thank you Adion, I tried it out last night - another massive help with this fix. This used to be a huge (and terrifying) problem and it has made an immense difference at live gigs. Greatly appreciated.
