this isn't actually what we asked for when we wanted turntable-brake is it? why not brake the track by setting pitch to -100% that way you would actually stop the track as well... and you could start it up again by pichin up...sounds Much better....

It's not possible to pause the track using a standard effect.

BTW, have you tried to use your right mouse button on the break effect ? You can get some cool effect by doing so.

Try the combination with the hold button (shortcut). Maybe that comes close to what you want.
